Developing hybrid social 
learning networks Debbie Holley (Anglia Ruskin University) John Cook & 
Patricia Santos (University of West of England) 
The McKinsey Global Institute Report (2012) on unlocking value and productivity through the use of 
social technologies suggests that the productivity of high-skill knowledge workers could be increased 
by 20-25% if the use of social technologies is implemented within and across an enterprise. 
The EU LearningLayers Project (www.learninglayers.eu), is working to support informal learning in the 
workplace by developing a range of co-designed online tools for specific industry sectors. 
The ‘Help-Seeking Tool’ is being developed following design based research principles which 
“Acknowledges although potentially powerful, the simultaneous pursuit of theory building and 
practical innovation is extremely ambitious’”(McKenney & Reeves, 2012). 
In the UK, we are working with Leeds Medical Institute of Education and a number of GP Practices in 
the north of England to co-design a ‘help-seeking’ tool. 
Designed to assist GP Practice based nurses and professionals with networking for problem solving, 
sharing information and drawing upon the expertise of what Vygotsky calls the ‘more capable peer’. 
The resulting tool is available for customisation and adaptation for other contexts – there are 
possibilities within ITE 
This tool and all other prototypes are freely available via the ‘Layers’ Open Design Library (ODL)
