Difference between web 1.0 and 2.0
1.0 2.0
Creating media involved big expensive
equipment (recording device , cameras) that
needed a big broadcasting company to be
distributed.
Now can be created using smaller and cheaper
devices (Mobile phones) and shared on online
websites such as YouTube.
*People didn’t have much choice over when
and how they get their media instead it was
controlled by the media institutions.
Now websites are available where the content
is provided by the users (YouTube, face book,
Wikipedia) and distributed to other users
around the world.
*Time was important- Schedules set by the
media which media consumers had to shape
their lives around. It was a one way process.
Interpersonal computing and Equality
More interactive: people contribute together
by sharing their knowledge for free to help
people that cannot pay.
TV living book 91-96: -Personal schedules build
around the media schedules.(very conscious of
time)
-Spent a long time watching TV
Watch TV less and are on the internet more.
Mass production for mass consumption.
Older corporations where in the shape of a
pyramid
Software as a service : Online replacements for
personal desktop applications are also
available for free. e.g Google docs provides
online spreadsheet, presentation and word
processor.
Web is a mass of conversations: New ideas are
usually developed from conversations.
Mass Innovation-more ideas being shared by
people than before.
Now everybody can contribute and leave their
mark as well as get recognition for the work
they do.
Positives Negatives
ubiquitous Information is not always reliable depending
on the website as anyone can share and edit.
Everything is only as good as the contributors
or the creators of the thing
Viral marketing: Using web 2.0 for word of
mouth marketing: encourages participation from
the Consumer as they providepositive reviews
about products and help help promote and raise
awareness of the product.
Negative reviews about movies could discourage
people from viewing the movie.
Companies are more aware of how their
customers feel about their products .Likewise it
increases the chances that a customers
complaint do not go unnoticed or ignored.
Copyright
Online campaigns are starting earlier Piracy
Studios are creating other forms of entertaiment
other than trailers to create an early buzz and
awareness of new films . An example is
Moviefone.com's "Unscripted" series, in which
two principals from a film interview each other
about the making of the movie.
Independant companies can showcase their
work for example Moviefone.com's Short Film
Festival is just one example.
