The human digestive system begins with ingestion of food in the mouth, where chewing and saliva begin breaking it down. The esophagus then transports the food to the stomach through peristalsis. In the stomach, food is further broken down by gastric acids. The resulting chyme then moves to the small intestine, where enzymes from the liver, pancreas, and intestine wall break it down further. The remnants then enter the large intestine, where water and electrolytes are absorbed before the remaining waste is stored in the rectum until excretion.
