Example 1: The marks obtained by 8 students in a class test are 12, 15, 16, 18, 20,
10, 11, and 21. Use the average formula and find out what is the average of the marks
obtained by the students?
Solution: Average
• To find: Average of marks obtained by 8 students
Marks obtained by 8 students in class test = 12, 15, 16, 18, 20, 10, 11,
and 21 (given)
• Total marks obtained by 8 students in class test
=(12+15+16+18+20+10+11+21) = 123/8
• Using the average formula,
Average = (Sum of Observation) ÷ (Total numbers of Observations)
Average = (12+15+16+18+20+10+11+21) ÷ 8 = 123/8 = 15.375

• Percentage Formula
Percentage = (Value ⁄ Total Value) × 100
Percentage Change Formula :
Percentage Increase Formula:
Percentage Decrease Formula: PD = Decreased Value / Original Value X 100
Increase /Decrease: ?
• There are 150 students in a class. Out of them, 75 are girls. Find the
percentage of girls in the class.
Solution: Percentage
• Total number of students in the class = 150
• Girls in the class = 75
• % of girls in the class = (75 ⁄ 150) × 100 = (7500 ⁄ 150) = 50%
Solution : Percentage Change Formula
• What is the percentage change in the weight of Krishna, if he had
decreased to 77 kg from 82 kg?
What is the percentage change in the rent of the house if
on the month of January it was Rs. 10,000 and in the
month of March it is Rs. 15,000?
• Solution:
We can clearly see that there is an increase in the amount of rent.
Here, Increased value = 15000 – 10000 = 5000
Original Value = 10000
Percentage Increase = (Increased Value ⁄ Original Value) × 100
= (5000 ⁄ 10000) × 100 = 50%
Hence, there is a 50% increase in the amount of rent.
Ratio : The ratio is used to compare the size of
two things with the same unit
• There exists 45 people in an office. Out of which
female employees are 25 and the remaining are male
employees.
Find the ratio of
• The count of females to males.
• The count of males to females.
Solution:
• Count of females = 25
• Total count of employees = 45
• Count of males = 45 – 25 = 20
• The ratio of the count of females to the count of males
25 : 20
5 : 4
• The count of males to the count of females
20 : 25
4 : 5
