The evolution of chemistry can be divided into four periods:
1) Black magic (prehistoric times to beginning of Christian era) where ancient people discovered uses of fire and developed metallurgy, pottery, and dyes.
2) Alchemy (Middle Ages to 17th century) where Islamic and European alchemists sought to transform base metals into gold and discover elixir of life.
3) Traditional chemistry (17th-18th century) where concepts of elements and compounds were established through experiments and theories of prominent chemists like Lavoisier.
4) Modern chemistry (19th century onward) where atomic theory was developed and various branches of chemistry emerged with new techniques and instruments.
