There are three main types of microphones: dynamic, condenser, and ribbon. Each microphone has a different polar pattern that shows its directional pickup levels. An omni-directional microphone picks up sound equally from all directions, ideal for lavalier mics. A super cardioid microphone has a heart-shaped pickup pattern that focuses mostly on sound from the front with some from the sides and back. A cardioid condenser microphone has a polar pattern that picks up mostly from the front with very little from the back.
