Fractions represent parts of a whole. The top number is the numerator representing the parts you have, while the bottom number is the denominator representing the total parts the whole is divided into. A proper fraction has a numerator less than the denominator, an improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to the denominator, and a mixed fraction combines a whole number with a proper fraction. Equivalent fractions have the same value though may appear differently.
