How data analytics will disrupt universities and improve student education
Andrew Maxwell, Professor Entrepreneurial Engineering, Lassonde School of Engineering
Based on a disruption framework from Prof. Sugata Mitra for FutureAgenda
Current University Education Systems are Obsolete
Designed for a world that has changed
Don't properly prepare today’s students for jobs that don't yet exist
Universities will be disrupted because:
Not cost effective and have flawed business models and market assumptions Make incorrect
assumptions about what people need to learn and how they learn
Don't understand the knowledge generation and sharing economy
Disruptive business models
That will take advantage of scaleable technologies, such as data analytics Allowing
different types of students to access content in multiple ways
Fundamentally change the role of the professor, and create a marketplace for content
New ways to engage with students
Students will be curated through customized relevant and world class curiculum
Progress will be assessed continuously, with altentate learning journeys suggested
Struggling students will be offered an intervention
Non - Linear Education Paths
Students take more control of their education, accessing courses from multiple sources
They will start and stop a variety of courses over their lifetimes
Micro-‐badging and certification will be an alternate to degrees
New Governance Models
Education strategy development shifts to a more collaborative multi-‐party process
Business, NGOs, students, and professorss provide guide curriculum and learning approach
Collaborative Networked Learning
There will be a movement to a hyper-‐collaborative global network consis4ng of learners,
institutions and content providers
Personal Learning Networks
Students will source information from their own Personal Learning Networks
and actively contribute to requests from other individuals within their network
University disruption will be enabled by a number of critical technologies:
★ Enhanced and widespread availability of high speed broadband access
★ Low cost wireless devices
★ Advances in big data, data analytics and machine learning
★ Blockchain technology
Student education will be improved through:
★ Better informed decision making based on data
★ Increased student control of their lifelong learning journey
★ Gudied and curated learning through real-time feedback and analysis
★ Creation of new markets in educational content and achievement recognition
