This document is a thesis submitted by Adri Boulle to the University of South Africa in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master of Arts degree in Health Studies. The thesis examines the knowledge of hypertensive patients regarding prevention strategies for coronary heart disease.
The introduction provides background on cardiovascular disease being a leading cause of death. The aim is to determine the knowledge of hypertensive persons in a selected area regarding cardiovascular risk factors in order to make recommendations for patient education. A quantitative survey design using a questionnaire was used with 46 hypertensive patients participating.
The literature review covers normal blood pressure physiology, hypertension, its classification and risk factors. It also discusses the impact of hypertension on coronary heart disease and stroke
