Topic:
Digital visual interface
Digital visual interface
 DVI is a video display interface developed by
the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG).
 The Digital interface is used to connect a video
source, such as a video display controller, to
display a device, such as computer monitor.
VGA & DVI are two different display interfaces.
Physically they look same but by there work
these are two different things.
VGA Carries Analog
Signals.
Which is the most
bigger drawback of
this interface.
Video Graphic
Array is an old
school standard,
Released on 1987.
 DVI Carries Digital signals.
 This connector was launched on 1999.
 It is Digital so it doesn’t mean that it can not carry analog
signals.
 DVI has many versions due to which its physical pin counts
are changing.
 In its different versions it carries different pin counters but
the maximum numbers of pin counters in DVI is 29 pin (
5+24 ).
DVI Presentation
These upper and lower two pins carry analog signals in DVI.
As it name show Digital visual interface it doesn’t mean it only carries digital
signals, it also carries analog signals.
If you have this type of adapter then you can also connect female
connector of VGA to the female connector of DVI.
DVI has two basic versions
DVI
Dual LinkSingle Link
DVI Single Link:
Data Rate = 3.96Gbit/s
Resolution = 1920 x 1200
Frame Rate = @60Hz (16:10)
DVI DUALLINK:
Data Rate = 7.92 Gbit/s
Resolution = 2560 x 1600
Frame Rate = @60Hz ( 16:10 )
 This version of Digital Visual Interface DVI-A carries Analog Signals only.
 DVI-A also doesn’t divide in further two versions, Like DVI-D & DVI-I.
 DVI-A is only Single Link, & it doesn’t need Dual link because it carries analog
signals so it do not need much resolution.
 Number of physical pins in DVI-A is 17 pins.
DVI-A
DVI-D
 This version of Digital Visual Interface DVI-D carries Digital Signals Only.
 DVI-D is divided into two versions DVI-D Single Link & DVI-D Dual Link.
 In this version VGA can not be connected because it do not carry analog signals.
 In DVI-D Single Link it has 19 pins & In DVI-D Dual Link it has 25 pins.
DVI-I
 This version of Digital Visual Interface DVI-I carries both Analog & Digital Signals.
 It is also divided into two version DVI-I Single Link & DVI-I Dual Link.
 VGA can be connected to the DVI-I.
 DVI-I Single Link has 23 pin counts & DVI-I Dual Link has 29 pin counts.
ADVANTAGES OF DVI:
 It carries Digital
Signals.
 Quality will not
decrease over the
length.
 Colour quality &
Image quality is
perfect.
Disadvantages of DVI:
 The connectors are quite
bulky.
 The wire becomes bigger.
 The Resolution of DVI is
not enough. (2560 x 1600)
@60Hz
Morepreferable for resolutionfactor is HDMI.
