This document discusses the dynamic performance issues faced by distance relays in series compensated transmission lines, particularly during fault conditions, such as voltage and current inversions, and overreach or underreach scenarios. The authors performed simulations using a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) to analyze a 400 kV system with series compensation, highlighting the challenges posed by series capacitors on distance relay functionality. The study underscores the necessity for detailed dynamic evaluations to ensure effective distance protection settings in power systems utilizing series compensation.
