at school, at work or just outside doing things. It was pure chaos from the moment it struck the
overly populated city. There were very few rescues that first evening of the earthquake, and as night

problems with the earthquake was that it destroyed much of it's government offices and the capital
city of Port–au–Prince, many of the resources that would have helped rescue people and revive the
city were destroyed. Port–au–Prince had a population of 2 million people at the time, that's almost a
fourth of the countries population, but the capitals infrastructure is layed out to support just over
115,000. So on top of the overpopulation in the area, you have a massive catastrophe and a whole lot
of people with nowhere to go, especially with all of the rubble. There wasn't much of anything that

This failure to consider what chaos these safety violations can create is one of the reasons so many
people had to suffer. Furthermore, the support that Haiti's government has provided was not
sufficient enough. Hou and Shi (2011) argued that the state of emergency was not proclaimed until
day 6, only 3433 nearby area policeman out of 6000 responded, the Haitian government and
MINUSTAH have been out of synchronization with responding to issues due to their building
collapsing. Many haitians have been wounded and in critical condition, perhaps if the rescue teams

lithosphere, which is the outer layer of the Earth. There are three types of plate boundaries:
extensional (divergent), compressional (convergent), and transform (J. Louie et al.). In a transform
boundary, which is more relevant to the topic at hand, two massive plates called plate tectonics lock
up against each other laterally preventing further movement and eventually building up pressure on
themselves. This pressure buildup stores potential energy which ultimately translates into kinetic
energy when the rocks can no longer hold onto the amount of pressure that builds up causing the
two plates to horizontally move or slide abruptly, which is what we know as an 'Earthquake' (Tom
Harris et al.). Earthquakes can also happen along fault lines, which are cracks that develop from the

access, or divide people when there is not. On January 12, 2010, Haiti was hit by an magnitude–7.0

In early 2010 central south Chile experienced a Mw = 8.8 earthquake and large tsunami waves that
devastated areas on the Chilean Pacific coast, nearby offshore islands, and areas near the epicenter.
In addition to the tsunami, the earthquake had many other geological consequences including
aftershocks, terrestrial and submarine land–sliding, elevation changes, and a gravity shift. The
purpose of this paper is to discuss and analyze the earthquake, its consequences, the resulting
damages, and mitigation.

The most severe impacts were observed on the Chilean coastline adjacent to the epicenter from San
Antonio – Tirua, and 670 km offshore on the Juan Fernandez Archipelago (Synolakis, 2011;
Yamazaki and Cheung, 2011). The tsunami hit many areas close to the epicenter within 30 minutes
of the main event, however due to bathymetry and coastline shape, tsunami directions, impacts, and

reflection between the continental shelf and the headlands, resulting in radiated tsunami energy to
become trapped over the continental margin (Yamazaki and Cheung, 2011).
6. Land sliding
The main event caused both terrestrial and submarine land sliding to occur in the area. Around 30
slides were delineated, with a majority of them being submarine (Volker, et.al., 2011). These
submarine slides were confined to the walls of various submarine canyons, and were characterized
as thin transitional slides retrograding into open slopes adjacent to the canyons (Volker, et.al., 2011).

victim of natural disasters such as hurricanes, torrential rains, floods and earthquakes. Several
natural disasters have plagued the country, destroying everything, and affecting everyone's health,
specifically women's and children's. These uncontrolled and unexpected events such as Hurricane
Matthew and Hurricane Ike have caused spikes in health issues such as cholera, AIDS, unwanted
pregnancies and children who lack proper care. On January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit
Haiti originating from a point 25 miles away from the capital of Port–au–Prince. Photographic
evidence and first hand reports made it immediately evident that there was massive physical damage

of diseases, the impact of poverty and the decline in the mental and physical stability of the youth,
demonstrates the negative impacts the disaster had, especially on the country's children.

with both their safety and reproductive health. In the aftermath of a disaster, women and girls are
extremely vulnerable to sexual coercion and violence. In Haiti the breakdown of law and order, and

Communication, Culture & Critique in 2014, provides a comparison and contrast of the media
coverage of Hurricane Katrina (2005), which devastated the U.S. Gulf Coast and was the costliest
natural disaster in the nation's history, and the Jan. 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti, which devastated
one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere. The purpose of the article is to discuss the
reasons why the news media framed Hurricane Katrina as an unmitigated and unimaginable

predominately supplied to the public through newspapers or radios at scheduled times. Instead, news
is accessible nearly anywhere at any time. With just a click of a button, news can be accessed from
your phone, tablet, or laptop in no time at all. Through different news sites, or even on different
social medias, you can find local, national, and international news. Stories can range anywhere from
pop culture to more serious topics like tragedies. Some of those news stories create an ethical
dilemma, especially when they involve death. Though news stories and their images are meant to be
informational, their content can sometimes be unsettling for readers. The use of certain diction and

However, by purchasing imported food instead of locally–grown food, the prosperity of local
farmers becomes undermined. This highlights Haiti's lack of self–sufficiency as a country. Haiti has
become extremely reliant on other countries for it to barely scrape by. In response to the horrific
earthquake, the world rallied together and pledged over $4.5 billion in aid to help alleviate Haiti's
troubles. Of the pledged aid, $2.3 billion has already been disbursed (Washington Post). Yet, years
after the incident, the country is still struggling to recover. The money is crucial for restoration, but

government had an honourable reputation.
