Personalizing Learning

Personal PD 40%
From June 4 to June 18 you will develop a personal PD plan. This plan
includes viewing a minimum of 20 hours of educational content including at
least 3 live events . You'll develop a page that includes a brief synopsis of
each event as well as recommendation of 5-8 events centered around a
theme. This theme can be as broad as "school reform" or "storytelling" or
revolve around a specific subject area "math". You'll provide discussion
questions and ideas for utilizing the content for other educators.
OR

What do you Want to Learn? 40%
Based on the one thing you want to learn, I'll provide you with one or two
people to connect with. Through a process of reading, commenting and
searching, you'll build a comprehensive list of resources and ideas that will
support you in your quest. Your page will consist of resources, people,
videos, etc and a summation of how you connected and found the various
content and the degree to which you have achieved what you set out to
learn.

Daily Reflections 30%
This might be called blogging but my focus is to observe and
participate in your learning. Given the condensed nature of this
course, it's imperative that you spend time daily in learning.
You'll be asked to blog a minimum of 5 times per week. (15 in
total). These posts would be a reflection of your other work in
class, what other classmates are writing about or observations
about technology and societal impacts on your learning in
general.

A Digital Story 30%
The power of use of digital media for storytelling is an
increasingly important skill for the 21st century. You'll be
required to create a personal narrative . Your story can be
created on Windows Photo Story 3, or any Movie Editing
software.

Editor's Notes

 • #3: I like to play, create and learn
 • #6: My talk has 3 parts: - background and perspective on education and society in general...my take. That was then, this is now - my personal approach -Ideas on moving forward
 • #10: Daughter asked, if I was the assistant Great stories
 • #11: -Bradley: Supposed to learn to read in grade one. He was already reading at about a grade 3 level
 • #12: -Michael: Used to cut other kids sweaters with scissors
 • #13: -Christina: Never smiled. My goal was to get her to laugh
 • #14: -Lacey: No matter what I assigned, she always drew unicorns

 • #17: .....the problem was that teaching 20 years ago and some say even today is......
 • #18: Some loved the closed door environments There was definitely a sink or swim mentality. The feeling that you were an independent contractor prevailed. Collaboration was rare and in many cases not necessary.
 • #19: While education may have been an isolated experience in some ways, community was pretty important for much of the 20th century. Barn Raising Bowling Alone....Curling Alone The Pop in Community is in our DNA
 • #20: Yet schools and the work place continued to foster and promote independence to the exclusion of community. These were competitive spaces where survival of the fittest mentality reigned.
 • #21: Lots of things around us are pointing to change.
 • #22: Or until we are forced The introduction to this changes everything. Learning has no boundaries, or at least there are fewer. What does this look like? These things are taking many to some very uncomfortable places. Our classrooms are and will change.
 • #23: sometimes it’s a world renown Physic teacher from MIT
 • #24: sometimes it’s a 10 years old boy from England who figured out how to use green screen in Windows Movie Maker Oh, and you can carry this in your pocket as well.
 • #25: We’ve been talking about life long learning and making school more relevant for years, we can’t wait to make it a reality any longer. Not just about technology but it’s once again pushing us. School still plays a huge role but if we hold it to the esteem its hand, we’ll have a very difficult time helping kids become life long learners.
