An ecosystem is a functional unit where living organisms interact with each other and the environment. The term ecosystem was coined by Sir Arthur Tansley in 1935. Ecosystems have abiotic and biotic components that interact and function as a unit. Solar energy is required to power ecosystem functions like primary productivity, decomposition, nutrient cycling, and energy flow between trophic levels. Nutrients cycle continuously through biogeochemical cycles between living organisms and the non-living environment.
