An ecosystem is defined as a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their non-living environment. There are two main types of ecosystems: terrestrial ecosystems, which can be found on land, and are classified as forests, deserts, grasslands or mountains, and aquatic ecosystems, which are found in bodies of water and are classified as marine or freshwater. Ecosystems have certain fundamental characteristics including their structure, processes like energy flow and matter cycling, and their ability to change over time through succession. Changes to ecosystems from factors like urbanization, industrialization, and pollution can negatively impact ecosystem health. Maintaining ecological balance requires carefully managing natural resources, controlling population growth, reducing pollution and preventing deforestation.
