Online Forum

Online Forum
 Online discussion site where people can hold conversations
in the form of posted messages.
 Differ from chat rooms, messages are often longer than one
line of text.
 Posted messages might need to be approved by the
moderator before it becomes publicly visible.
 A simple conversation is called “thread”.
 A forum can contain number of subforums, each of which
may have several topics.
 A new discussion started is called thread, can be replied to
many people as so wish.
History
 Early internet forums – described as web version of an
electronic mailing list or newsgroup – allowed people to
comment messages an comment on other messages.
 Later dedicated forums were developed for particular
topics.
 Some of the first forums
Planet forum – 1970
EIES System – 1976
KOM System – 1977
Delphi – 1983, still active with four million members.

Programming languages used in forums:
PHP
Java
Perl
ASP
Structure
Administrators
Moderators
Members
Administrator
 Manages the technical details required for running the
site.
 Promote or demote member to moderators or from
moderators to members.
 Manage the rules
 Create sections and subsections
 Performs any database operations
 Often act as moderators
Moderator
 Granted access to the posts and threats of all members for
the purpose of moderating discussion and also keeping
the forum clean.
 Common Privileges:
Deleting and merging of posts
Moving and splitting of posts and threads
Locking
Renaming
Banning and unbanning of members
Suspending and unsuspending of members
Warning the members
Members
 A forum is driven and updated by them
 Information related to the topics are updated by them
Examples
 REDDIT – Social news collection of web content.
 STACK OVERFLOW – Computer programming related
queries.
 QUORA – Question and answer community, users can ask
logical and absurd questions.
 INDIA – FORUMS – Television serials, Bollywood celebrity
interviews, Internet radio, Fans Club etc.
 TRIP ADVISOR – Travel related queries.

 Discussion or informational website.
 Informal diary – style text entries, called posts.
 Posts are typically displayed in reverse chronological
order.
 Most recent posts appears first, at the top of web page.
Types of Blogs
 Personal blogs – Online diary entry or commentary
written by an individual.
 Collaborative blog or group blog – Written and published
by more than one author.
 Corporate and Organizational Blogs – used internally and
only available to employees via an intranet.
Micro Blogging
 Posting small pieces of digital content
 Text, pictures, links, short videos, etc.
 Became popular, easy to read on the go when waiting
 Example – Twitter
Types of blogs
 Vlog – Blog comprising videos
 Link log – Log comprising links
 Sketch blog – Site containing portfolio of sketches
 Photo Blog – Site containing photos
 Tumblelogs – Blogs with shorter posts and mixed media
types
Reverse Blog
 Composed by users rather than a single blogger
 Can be written by several contributing authors on a topic
or opened up for anyone to write.
 Limited entries are allowed in order to keep it from
operating like a web forum.
