Effective Syllabus Coverage in Elementary Schools

What is a syllabus?
• A summary of topics to be covered a school
• Often prepared, supervised or controlled by an
authority
• Provided in paper form or online.
• In Uganda the NCDC responsible for primary and
secondary syllabus.
• Contains specific information about the course, such
as how, where and when to interact with pupils.
• Ensures consistency between schools
The Relationship among the National Syllabus,
the Schemes of Work and the Lesson Plan
Features of a good syllabus
• Description of target group
• Aims and Objective
• List of topic/content
• Suggested techniques
• Evaluation patterns
• Entry level of the target group
Factors affecting syllabus
accomplishment
• Funding capacities
• Instructional materials*
• Teacher training
• Effective monitoring and supervision
• Availability of school facilities and Infrastructure*
• School enrollment*
• Quality and quantity of teaching staff
• Teachers’ conditions of services*
• Time management
• Teacher and Pupil irregularity
Availability Instructional materials
Instructional materials such as books,
ICT devises, in the absence of teaching
and learning materials, the teaching and
learning processes will be hampered. no
books or writing material, no chalk, no
science apparatus, inadequate or out of-
date library facilities.
Availability of school facilities and
Infrastructure
In certain instances, some schools have
inadequate classroom accommodation,
which fails smooth accomplishing of the
syllabus
School enrollment characterized by overcrowded
classes
Teachers’ conditions of services
Working conditions have remained poor,
particularly in rural schools. Teacher salaries are
low and payment unreliable. , no housing also
demoralizes the teachers who may resort to go
into commercial enterprises to supplement their
meager salaries. Consequently, there have been
constant strikes by the teachers
Time management by school administrators and
teachers
Unnecessary lengthy speeches (inducing members to sleep), frequent
meetings held by visiting Officials, health talks, variety shows and
public holidays.
Strategies to syllabus coverage versus limited time
and adequate preparedness for pupils’ assessment
Teachers:- more time, time
management, Vs. time wasting,
child study, Gand C, regular
assessment
Administration:- ICT, candidate
classes, tr accommodation, tr
remuneration, T.O.R, qualified staff
