Characterization
Characterization is the way an author expresses the characters
traits and characteristics. William Golding uses characterization to
describe how the character look and describes their personality.
one example is the character Piggy. He can be characterized as an
intellectual boy who is chubby, wears spectacles, and has asthma.
These characterizations can be inferred when the author writes,
"The naked crooks of his knees were plump, caught and scratched
by thorns... He was shorter than the fair boy and very fat." he is
very intelligent because the author
shows his ability to having facts to
defend whether or not they should
do certain things, such as building
the fire before building shelters.
His intelligence keeps up the group
of boys in Lord of the Flies.
Lord of the Flies: Literary Techniques Used By William Golding
Symbolism
Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities.
An example of the use of symbolism in Lord of the Flies is the
conch that Ralph finds. It symbolizes the unity of the group and
authority that Ralph has because of the rules made about using
the conch. "We can use it to call others. Have a meeting...signs of
life were now visible on the beach...I'll give the conch to the next
person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking." Another
symbol used is the fire built for signaling the ships. the fire
symbolizes a possibility of the savages of being rescued and hope
of getting out of the hell life on the
island. If the fire is able to signal a
ship it would come to rescue them.
They can only hold on to this hope
and the fire is the thing that give
them this hope so William Golding
uses it to represent the feeling of
the characters.
Motif
Motif is a dominant or recurring idea expressed by the author. An
example of motif use by William Golding is the pig. The pig is
continuously mentioned in the story. Jack gets obsessed with
hunting after he fails to kill the first pig they sighted. The pig, a
good source for meat, is what Jacks priority becomes killing at
least one pig before being rescued. Another motif used by William
Golding is the possibly existing beastie that all the littluns are
afraid of. The beastie , representing lost of innocence is a topic
brought up in cases of need for
protection and existence of the
danger it can bring to them. they
say, "maybe there is a beast....
maybe it's only us." If there is a
beastie they need to be protected
from it, and it dosen’t exist they
have to make sure of it. The author
uses it to represent their fear.
Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing is when clues are provided by the author that help
predict what might occur later in the story. Examples of
foreshadowing in Lord of the Flies is when the author writes
about the fire spreading. He writes, "Smoke was rising here and
there among the creepers that festooned the dead or dying
trees. As they watched a flash of fire appeared at the root of
one wisp and then the smoke thickened. Small flame stirred at
the trunk of a tree and crawled away
through the leaves and brushwood,
dividing and increasing..." The spread
of the fire and it destroying
everything in its way foreshadows
the destroying of the individuals
humanity at a very small time period.
