"The transition from the academic university world to the real
world has not been straightforward."
"I think I am a late starter."
"Sometimes making decisions can be non-intuitive —
I don't know how I made them or how I got to a
certain point."
"I really feel that university has not prepared
me for the real world, whether it be the world of
architecture, business ... or the grown-ups."
"I sometimes think I have had a sheltered
life. I'm making up for lost time."
"Jimmie"
4th year architectural
student. Went straight
to university from high
school, also studied
Chinese & spent
18 mths in China as
work experience.
"Jimmie" ate some food whilst I conducted the phone
interview — it was late after work and he had returned
to his digs (and was chewed out by his landlady for
walking inside with shoes on). He sounded relaxed
and we chatted quite freely. It was only at the end of the
interview that he told me he had eaten already.
"I went to China because I was meant
to ... there was no culture shock."
"My attitudes about architecture have been quite naive."
"I think back on when my friends in high school were listening
to, learning and playing music, it is still relevant to them now.
I just wasted my time, even up to 8 hours per day playing
computer games."
A young focused creative architecture
student— doing well in his studies. But
not confident in the workplace and
unsure of his place in it.
A way to see how to be comfortable
with an artistic nature.
Confused over doing a good piece of work versus
an original master piece.
He should be less critical of himself.
Lacking a sense of direction.
Not up to his own high standard.
He has more insight than he gives himself credit for.
He is quite adventurous and clearly can focus acutely.
Concerned over what he doesn't know.
School & university hasn't prepared him for the
bigger questions he wants to ask.
Needs some confidence building through reassurance.
He is lacking some guidance whether from
the university, or parents/friends?
Lacking a mentor?
Wants to not just be creative but wants to succeed
in a creative endeavour.
Struggling with a sense of meaning of his life?
Critical of himself for lack of experience
- worldly and professionally!
Very concerned with what he doesn't know,
yet he is a very bright young man.
Fear of failure?
Sets high standards for himself.
Yet he has had some unique and quite
directed/focused experiences
Lack of self-confidence and self-
esteem in the professional arena.
