Interpretation
Definition of Interpretation Opinion regarding a set of facts. A degree of subjectivity is involved on the part of the individual, based on his or her experience, personality, and biases. I would also like to add that it is more an opinion of the subject at hand. Your own interpretation based off your own knowledge.
Quick explanation of this would be an excerpt from book “Psychology in Action” by Karen Huffman (pg 158) on interpretation: After selectively sorting through incoming sensory information and organizing it into patterns, the brain uses this information to explain and make judgments about the external world. This final stage of perception –interpretation-is influenced by several factors, including perceptual adaptation, perceptual set, frame of reference, and bottom-up or top-down processing. Simple example is take a pair of goggles that alter your visual perception and try to adapt to it then we you get that down take them off and see that it will be a little challenging to get back to normal.
Ways Interpretation is used Focus group (marketing) interpreting In focus group interpreting, an interpreter sits in a sound proof booth or in an observer's room with the clients. The interpreter hears the conversation through headphones and simultaneously interprets into the target language for the clients. Escort interpreting In escort interpreting, an interpreter accompanies a person or a delegation on a tour, on a visit, or to a meeting or interview. An interpreter in this role is called an escort interpreter or an escorting interpreter . This is liaison interpreting. Sign language interpreting When a person speaks, an interpreter will render the speaker's meaning into the sign language used by the deaf party. Reading Analysis (for tests and literature) Mostly used for testing like the Standardized testing used in many states. You have to interpret or analyze a story. It’s also used in classes just like this one and your reading journal is used to give your own interpretation of the story.
Perceptual adaptation. Do you think you could adapt to a distorted world one with your left on your right and up is down? Excerpt from Huffman (pg 159): Psychologist George Stratton (1897) wore special lenses for eight days. For the first few days, Stratton had a great deal of difficultly navigating in this environment and coping with everyday tasks. By the third day he began to experience a change and noted: Walking through the narrow spaces between pieces of furniture required much less care than hitherto. I could watch my hands as they wrote, without hesitating or becoming embarrassed thereby.
What it Means to you? Interpretation is used in many ways other than ones previously explained. We all interpret every single day. From understanding simple TV shows to the people around us. If we didn’t interpret we wouldn’t understand a single thing. The reason why we even have knowledge is because we understand the material and interpret it to understand it and turn it into knowledge. I cannot simply explain about how the brain works in a small presentation but pick up a psychology book and read I am sure you’ll find it entertaining.
