Personal data is defined as any information from which a living individual can be identified. It includes - ● Name, such as full name, maiden name, mother’s maiden name, or alias ● Personal identification number, such as social security number (SSN), passport number, driver’s license number, taxpayer identification number, or financial account or credit card number ● Address information, such as street address or email address ● Information about an individual that is linked or linkable to one of the above categories, such as date of birth, place of birth, race, religion, weight, activities, geographical indicators, employment information, medical information, education information, and financial information Purpose ● Provide a set of standardised data protection laws across all the member countries. ● Make it easier for EU citizens to understand how their data is being used, and also raise any complaints, even if they are not in the country where its located. Fines Fines for noncompliance can equal up to the greater of EUR 20M or 4% of global annual revenue. Regulators can also issue various types of enforcement notices. Auditing Regulators can also conduct audits and direct specific actions if noncompliance is discovered. Long-term Impact Organizations need to embed a culture of privacy throughout their organization and need to be able to demonstrate compliance with GDPR, with accountability being a key theme.
