CIRCUIT DESIGN
GROUND RULES
• Raise your hand before you ask a question or respond to another
students comment.
GROUND RULES
• Be encouraging to your other classmates.
SAFETY RULES…YES MORE RULES
• We will only work with circuits in
the class with the materials
provided
• You are only allowed to work on
circuit projects at home ONLY IF
YOUR PARENTS ARE
SUPERVISING
• Do not go home and mess with
outlets, batteries, or any other
type of electrical device
You can really really hurt yourself.
LET’S INTRODUCE OURSELVES TO EACH OTHER
1. What’s your name?
2. Why are you taking this class?
3. What do you do for fun?
WHAT DO I DO?
• I am a PhD student at Rutger
University - Newark
• I do research into how
conductive the ground is…
I shoot laser beams into….just
kidding
• But I do shoot electromagnetic
waves into the ground to better
understand what’s under the
ground
Env Science - Lesson 1
WHAT DO YOU ALREADY KNOW?
• Let’s see what you have already done…
1. Paper Circuits
2. LED
3. Breadboards
4. Raspberry Pi
5. Switches
6. Using batteries
7. What else have you all worked with in regards to circuit design
WHAT DO YOU ALREADY KNOW?
• Take out a sheet of paper and write down one thing that relates
to circuit design that you already know!!!
WHAT WE WILL COVER IN THIS CLASS
• The first few weeks will be discussing electromagnetism,
electricity, circuit blueprints, how batteries work
• Then, we will put all the theory to practical use
• Maybe we can solve a problem and apply our knowledge to an
environmental problem!!!
• There will be quizzes…don’t worry
THE TAKE AWAY
• I don’t want you to leave this class and only be able to light up
LED lights
• I want you to be able to apply what you have learned and use it!!!!
A LIL HISTORY
Alessandra Volta
• Invented the 1st battery
• Aided scientists in producing
steady flow of electric current
• A unit of electric potential was
named after him. (the Volt)
BEN FRANKLIN
• Benny was the 1st person that we know of
to discover electricity
• Up until that time, scientists had mainly
known about and experimented with static
electricity.
• Benjamin Franklin took things a big step
ahead.
• He came up with the idea that electricity
had positive and negative elements and
that electricity flowed between these
elements.
• He also believed that lightning was a form
of this flowing electricity.
HOW DOES ELECTRICITY WORK
• Electricity is the flow of
electrons around a circuit.
• But why do the electrons
flow around a circuit?
• Can a circuit be made of
anything…like a piece of
wood?
• Metals like copper have
what is know as free
electrons
• What the math is an
electron?
WHAT ARE RESISTORS AND CONDUCTANCE
HOW DOES ELECTRICITY WORK
• Take that same sheet of paper and write down something you
learned from this lecture that you did not know before?
