Introduction on ESP System • ESP System “Electrical Submersible Pumps” is a type of Artificial lift in Oil wells. • Artificial lift is required to overcome the bottom hole pressure of a well to maintain the desired production rate, this could done by injecting gas into the producing fluid column to reduce its hydrostatic pressure, or using a down hole pump to provide additional lifting pressure. • Artificial lift could be used in mature wells which can no longer produce under natural conditions and also in young wells to increase it production rate. • Other types of Artificial lift: • ESP • Hydraulic Piston • Plunger lift • Gas lift • Progressive Cavity Pumps • Rod Pumps

- 7. History of ESP Mr. Arutunoff developed a multistage centrifugal pump to be connected with a small diameter motor Arutunoff founded Bart company by partnership with Phlipps Petroleum company. First manufactured pump was installed on a well in Kansas,USA. Reda pumps copmany “Russian Electrical Dynamo of Arutunoff” was founded by Arutunoff in Germany Schlumberger purchased Camco Inc. ESP division is known as Schlumberger- Reda. The entire group was sold for $300 million and became division of Camco Inc. Reda merged with TRW and became TRW Reda 2% of the oil produced in USA was lifted by Reda pumps

Adaptable to required subsurface wellheads 6 ft apart for maximum surface-location density. Permit use of minimum space for subsurface controls and associated production facilities. Quiet, safe, and sanitary for acceptable operations in an offshore and environmentally conscious area. Generally considered a high-volume pump. Below approximately 400 B/D, power efficiency drops sharply; ESPs are not particularly adaptable to rates below 150 B/D. Need relatively large (greater than 4½-in. outside diameter) casing size for the moderate- to high-production-rate equipment.
