Essay Writing
Definition
• An essay is a collection of paragraphs
• The topic of an essay is an umbrella-concepts, which contains
multiple sub-topics.
• Each paragraph picks up one sub-topic and develops it.
• The paragraphs are then combined in a logical order, to form the
essay.
What to do in the beginning
• Look at the topic of the essay. Think of the possible subtopics.
• Use a rough sheet to draw the thought bubbles. Eg.:
• Also, you have to plan an order for arranging those paragraphs.
Definition of competition
Competition in nature and animals
Competition among humans
Competition faced by you
Positive Effects of competition
Negative Effects
Conclusion: summary-point of nature, humans, you in competition; most important positive effect and
negative effect. Last line: Balance off, by saying competition is good but, but with certain checks.
Note:
We move
From big concepts to small
Nature
Humans
I myself
Detailing the sub-topics
• Each sub-topic can then become a topic sentence.
• Supporting sentences are added to that specific topic sentence.
• Supporting sentences can include examples, further information
about the topic sentence, categories / lists, compare-contrast, cause-
effect, problem-solution, etc. to develop the idea of the topic
sentence.
• One paragraph should develop only one idea. That keeps the
paragraph simple, straight-forward, and excludes irrelevant points.
• This is called “UNITY of ideas in a paragraph”
Logical ordering, or coherence
• Discourse-markers are used to indicate the logical order of the sentences
within a paragraph.
Eg.: Words like “so”, “That’s why” are used to indicate “Effects”
Words like “Clearly” are used while proving a point.
• Discourse markers make a paragraph easily understandable to a reader.
Once the paragraphs are completed
• Read all the paragraphs thoroughly for errors in grammar or
punctuation.
• Check for logical fuzziness across the paragraphs. If any, we use
discourse markers like ‘However’, ‘clearly’, for example, etc. to clarify
our message more.
Last thing to do
Only when errors are corrected,
one can turn to thinking of quotations.
A good essay needs a strong beginning line.
One can either make it up, or, use a quote/proverb for the purpose.
Common errors in essay writing
• Missing out discourse markers. That hampers logical clarity of ideas
• Errors in tense, modifiers, and agreement in noun-pronoun an
subject-verb.
• Punctuation—people do not use comma and semi-colons properly.
They end up writing long sentences, which could easily have been
shorter sentences, is semi-colons and commas were used properly.
Why essay writing is a skill
• It tests your planning of ideas, i.e. topic >subtopic >detailing of
subtopic.
• It tests your elaboration of ideas with background knowledge of a
topic.
• It tests your logical sequencing of ideas, while writing.
• It tests your language skills, like grammar, vocabulary, etc.
Essay on a legal topic
Every legal topic has the following:
• General definition
• Constitutional definition; objectives of that act or idea
• History / background events relevant to its creation
• Application in current life
• Challenges / Negative aspects / Disputes to that idea or act
• Conclusion: a balancing opinion
