Evaluating preliminary task
Section 1: Filming Process
Within our group we had two designated camera men (Charlie and Tom) they both worked
smoothly together and gave each other feedback if they believed a shot could be done
differently to improve it. All of our filming was done in two takes over twos day, we were
not rushed for time to collect the shots we required. Due to the location of where we were
film being a school changing room, the amount of peoples bags within the changing room
would change , if we were to film one shot without the bags or with the bags the
consistency of the Mise en scene would be ruined so as a group we decided to include the
bags to the Mise en scene of our Preliminary task.
The filming process did suffer some setbacks on the first day as the camera was full and had
no spare memory space. We did lose some valuable time on the first shoot making space on
the camera but it did not hinder us to much in completing everything we needed to do in
that day. The sound quality as we shot a long shot in a narrow hall way (at 0.14 seconds on
the video ) the microphone on the camera was too far away from the actor (me) to pick up
what was being said clearly, the sound was also distorted and echoed due to where the shot
was shot, the group was contemplating re-recording the audio at a later date but we
wanted the diegetic speech as recorded by the camera.
What I have learned moving forward for the main task is that our time management as a
group was successful and we were not falling behind shooting our piece however there are
a few improvements to be made; avoid losing time in the filing process by clearing memory
on the camera and picking an appropriate location for filming with consistent sound quality.
Section 2 : Meeting the brief
We successfully filmed and edited 7 out of 9 our shots we had story boarded to film and edit
one was dropped and sadly one was lost in the upload to Youtube. These shots were
tailored to meet the brief to fit within our story line.
I believe we mainly reached the targets set for the brief bar the one already addressed
above and the lack of shot/reverse shot, all the shots were clear to see as shown above .
‘character opens door’ 0:07
seconds
‘character crosses room’ 0:09
seconds
At this point we did not meet the
breif. ‘sits down in chair opposite
another character’ we do not see
the character sitting down.
‘exchanges a couple of lines of
dialogue’
0:14 seconds
‘match on action’ 0:08 seconds
Section 3: technical skills
Our use of titles was basic and faded in then faded out again this was edited in, in four
different scenes. They including the names of all the people who helped produce our piece, I
believe we should have included a ‘title’ to our piece and edited it into the start of the piece.
The sound quality of the piece was poor and inconsistent at points we had zero sound then
we have a moment of speech, I believe to level out the incontinency of the sound, a non-
diegetic sound track behind the video would have improved the piece.
For the future I believe we could spend longer looking for an appropriate filming location
because the lighting was poor (for example 0:02 seconds) also the mise on scene of the
sports hall and changing room didn’t fit the atmosphere we were trying to create (an erer . I
believe the camera men worked well together and produced some smooth shots with a
variety of low angles (0:09 seconds) , high angles (0:08 seconds ) and different shot lengths
successfully.
The editing process brought the whole piece together, we managed to create a CCTV
camera visual effect within primer pro and this was a highlight of the piece. The transition
of each shot was smooth and simple with most shots running into the next we used one
fade from black at (0:11 seconds) .
