Evaluation – Question 4 Who would be the audience for your media product?
Who is your film aimed at? Our film is mainly aimed at the female population aged under 35 as they were the people that had a higher interest when they were asked whether they liked romance films or not (‘see uk film council stats), and it wouldn’t really matter what ethnicity they were. We would be aiming it at all social classes as when we researched it, there wasn’t a large amount of difference between any of the classes so it would be appropriate to aim at all social classes. We have chosen to target this audience not just because we are the same sort of age and we can associate with them but it’s the age group and gender that are more likely going to watch a romance film, so aside from the stats we think this would be the right audience to target Our film is more likely going to be released into a multiplex cinema so that it targets a more mainstream audience, which is what we are aiming at. So I think that romance films will appeal to mass audiences
BBFC classification I think that our film would be classified as a 12 by the BBFC because there would be issues with the male protagonist showing alcohol abuse and violence which many people maybe offended by. However we will not show this to a large extent. Between the main two protagonists there will be the portrayal of sexual activity only ranging to kissing without the detail of real sex. Even though there are parts of 15 for example when the male turns to alcohol when he cant cope anymore in life, in this film opening its not enough to make it a 15 as we aren't showing it to a real extent. The background to our film isn’t really anything that would cause any harm to the audience as it is only showing a problem in a relationship and how they are dealing with it. Having our film placed as a 12 it then shows that our audience would be teenage girls and also the female population mainly people under 35 as they were the age group that would watch our sort of film.
Context of the film I think that in a romance film the audience would be expecting a range of sexual references which would be dealt with in a sensitive way as romance are more sensitive and emotional, for example it would be brief nudity but not frequent and also sexual references throughout the film but not to a high reference. If it was to be a horror film there wouldn’t be a high use of sexual references instead there would be more violence and references to drugs. The BBFC guidelines state that in a film that is rated a 12 there is only allowed drug references to be infrequent, physical and psychological threat is to be kept to a minimum, moderate language, brief and discreet nudity, brief sexual activity, mature themes but only suitable for teenagers and moderate violence is allowed so this would be more suitable than rating our film a 15.
Target audience member This is Anna, and I chose her to be my target audience member because she was in the same age group as she was 30 and she would be perfect to interview. Also her favourite film genre is romance and that fits with the genre that we are doing. The thing that she likes about a romance film is that there is always something that is going to happen to the couple in the film and it always tests their relationship and in the end it always turns out alright. She also said that romance films attract her sort of age group as they are not immature about love and some people even might be able to compare it to their lives. She didn’t want to see any big proposal or something that happens in every relationship as it was too predictable, she wanted something that the audience wasn’t expecting and I think we have done that Her general interests are just being a house wife and looking after all the animals in her garden and looking after her children. The thing she enjoys is after putting the children to bed to have a drink and sit and enjoy a film with her boyfriend.
