Research Task 2
Our film is targeted at the age group of 15 and higher. Through asking different ages of people
targeting and speaking to various target audiences. This gave us the knowledge prior to other
movies which are fairly similar to ours, what would be suitable for our thriller. From this
research through interviews and the content of our film the film would appeal to young adults
who want some action and excitement in a film as well. The teenager market from 15 to roughly
25 who will be dominantly men, would enjoy our film since the audience can relate to the action
in the thriller and gadgets used in our opening sequence to our thriller.
The certificate of 15 we believe would be used due to:
The language, which will be used in our film
The dangerous behaviour such as the use of weapons in our film
Strong language could be used throughout the film
Strong violence throughout film
Sexual activity in thriller
WHO ARE FILM IS AIMED AT?
3 Days To Kill – (15)
This film involves the character Ethan Runner who has a dangerous
career. Ethan becomes ill and can’t carry on due to his terminal
illness. Ethan has the opportunity to live when the agency offer him a
cure for exchange to kill the most violent terrorist. The film differs to
the fact that the only way for Sean too survive is too kill to gain the
antidote, whereas Ethan in this film has the choice. This Action thriller
is similar to ours with the idea for an exchange and the use of violence
and strong language, means it has been rated a 15. Due to the
similarity in film and same use of references it shows our film is also
suited to the certificate rating of 15.
Sabotage- (15)
Sabotage is a film, which is also an action thriller. The target audience
for this film is also a 15, this is shown through the use of drugs,
violence and sex references. This film is about a crime and involves
action and a mystery case. The film is about the mystery of a stash of
cash going missing and a group being targeted by violent people. This
film uses a lot of weapons and mystery which shows how the film is
rated to a 15.
LIST OF FILMS - SIMILAR TO OURS AND THEIR TARGET AUDIENCE.

Sin City 2 – (18)
This film is about a detective who is on the streets on Sin City. This film involves the detective
Dwight who receives a call from his ex girlfriend, Ava Lord. Dwight refuses to meet her. The story
also involves a stripper called Nancy who is plotting against a corrupt senator and finds herself in
deep trouble. This film involves nudity and drug use and extreme violence. This becomes clear in
the difference in our film to the 18 rating in this film. Our film does not involve nudity and to the
extent of extreme violence as this film. Therefore this film, gives us the greater knowledge for why
18 and under can also watch our film.
The Two Faces of January- (12)
This thriller is about tourists who are misled and approached by a local con man who is imposing
as a tour guide. These American tourists find themselves in a situation that leads to danger. The
film involves strong language and moderate violence. There are also some scenes of smoking. This
film does not show as much violence and as strong weapon crimes as ours therefore shows a clear
idea that our film does not have the moderate violence like this film making our film best suit a 15.
To Conclude:
From looking at 2 action thrillers with the target audience of 15 plus gave us the idea that our
thriller also will show similar traits and use of violence that is portrayed in those films. The other 2
films the 18 and 12 also shows that our film would not appeal to our maximum target audience if
we made ours a 12 since a 12 has to have moderate violence. Our film does not meet that criteria
and believe it holds extreme violence due to the Kill list and weapons that Sean has for his task in
our Action thriller. The 18 also we believe will miss out on some of our prime audience from 15-
18. We believe that our main target audience on top of 18-25 will also be interested in our type of
film. Prior to this we also did our target audience video where we found mostly men preferred
thriller films even though we do believe our film will attract some women. Overall we are targeting
at men between the ages 15-25 as our main target audience due to the use of strong language and
violence our film entails.

Sabotage statistics – IMDB
From an analysis of the data, we can
see that males from 18-45 out number
females by about 8 to 1. This
demonstrates that our film is targeting
a similar audience demographic to
Sabotage, as our plot and narrative
trajectory is similar. We do believe that
we can target from 15 as well, where
males 18 and under are also higher than
under 18 females.
ANALYSING TARGETED
AUDIENCE
ANALYSING TARGETED
AUDIENCE
All of these statistics, show a similar trend, which show how men aged 18-29 was significantly the highest statistics. This
shows that the target audience was the highest and that this demographic for our kind of movie is suitable from 15+. The
statistics all show that 18-45 are the main audience for Men. This shows that our choice of 15+ will meet a wide audience
mostly male who are dominantly 15-29. The statistics for women is dramatically lower, which makes sense that there is still
a secondary audience for those women who will watch our thriller.
IMDB statistics
My Secondary Target audience would be girls. This is because
mostly men are the audience for my thriller where the thriller is
liked by mostly teenage boys from 15. I believe this is most suitable
due to certain shots and violence shown due to the thriller being a
crime thriller. Girls do tend to like thrillers, but girls would only fall
into the secondary target audience due to the demand for men is
significantly higher due to linking men to enjoying more violent
and gruesome films. This therefore shows them as our main
audience in contrast to girls who would be our secondary target
audience.

AUDIENCE?

To conclude, this feedback gave us the idea that this thriller will appeal more to men. This is
because the genre of “thrillers” is more appealing to men then women. However we do
believe some James bond fans and some women will like the thriller due to the action sub
genre we have included within our thriller. The feedback also showed that the gender of the
actors does not make the thriller any better or worse, this is because we were mostly told
that the action of the film is more important and how the setting and character is
portrayed. This therefore shows the climax of our film is the most important feature. The
feedback on our thriller plot itself was liked by all of our participants and found the idea
“exciting” and not something they have seen before. Even though our idea is inspired by
other films and news articles there are not many films like ours and the idea does show
some unique features to it, which have attracted our audience. Our participants also
confirmed the age for our target audience where they believe the audience would appeal to
teenager’s to young adults. We do still believe that some middle aged men may appeal to our
thriller since the may relate with out man character who is also a middle aged man.
MEDIA- LOOKING AT TARGET
AUDIENCE FOR THRILLER - CLIP
Click this clip, to watch the full interview of
different ages and target audiences which lead to
the decision of our dominant target audience.
The explanation for our thriller plot has changed, however I still
believe that our thriller will meet the audience we have targeted, since
we have made the thriller more unique and different and there are
only minor changes which we have adapted to the thriller anyway.
EVIDENCE FROM INTERVIEW DONE SUPPORTING TARGET
AUDIENCE?
Using these two clips from the
video I made, shows that females
are not our prime audience and
that in fact we found from the
video as a whole shown below was
found that men from 15 were our
main audience. This shows that
teenagers would be our prime
audience. Women are not the
main target audience shown in the
interviews but it is believed that
women would also enjoy thrillers
as shown by another clip in the
whole footage where a thriller was
preferred by a female aged 16.
The thriller would also appeal to
young male adult to middle aged
men who enjoy a good thriller.
FACE BOOK PROFILE – FROM
TARGET AUDIENCE
This Facebook page, highlights a 18 year old
boy. This person comes into our category
for our film and we believe that from his
page that our film suits his needs. This
Facebook page illustrates he has watched
films which are thrillers and some films
which portray similar aspects to our film.
This shows that Simon is likely to watch our
film. Our film is targeted at 15+ since I
believe we will gain an audience of 15 year
olds plus. Simon, as shown from the
Facebook page highlights his interest on top
of his friends also liking thrillers and going
to the movies together. Simon is also shown
to like numerous films which have a similar
nature and sub genre to ours, which makes
me confident that our target audience is
targeted correctly.
