Evaluation question one Digipak:
In what ways do your products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?
This is the final Digipak:
Researching the genre:
To help use create some ideas for the Digipak we did some research in the music genre that
we were going to be working with, which was the indie genre. This allowed us to get some
ideas and inspiration for our product.
- A basic scheme with colours such as black, white, yellow, grey and possibly some
reds and oranges.
- Simple and easy to read font
- Band names in bold so that it will stand out
- The images on the Digipak don't look over the top and thy look natural
Comparing our product to a professional product:
A digipak is a form of printed product, so it has similarities such as using images, text and
graphics as well as distinct features of the digipak form examples are track listings and
copyright details.
In this part of the of the evaluation question I will compare our Digipak to a profession
digipak with in the same music genre and then I will list the similarities with in them.
The key features of the professional digipak are you can see that the main colour that is
used is Black, but there is also use of white throughout the album. These two colours work
really well together because the white contrasts against the black. Other key features of the
digipak is the bold band name on the back of the album and the image of the band that is
used on the inside next to the CD disk. The final two key features that are used on the album
are the list of tracks that are featured on the album and the logo that goes across the Cd
disk and the front cover, this logo looks like a sound wave, which could have something to
do with the lyrics of the songs. Whereas the key features in out digipak is that it has a bold
colour scheme that stands out when you look at it meaning that it will not only it in with the
genre what we are working in but it will also help and catch people's interest when they look
at it. In our product there is also a mosaic pattern that runs throughout some of the pages,
this helps the continuity of the product and the synergy between all three products that we
have produced, linking to this there is also the logo of the band running through the product.
The images above are the two products that I will be comparing. The product on the left is
our digipak that we created for one of the three product and then the image on the right is
the professional product which is the ‘Arctic Monkeys’ album digipak. There are many
similarities to do with these digipaks. The first similarity they I will talk about is the colour
schemes which are used in both of the products. As you can see just by looking at the
images you can see that the colour scheme is similar, the colours that are used in both
products are basic but bold. In the ‘Arctic Monkeys’ digipak the main colours that are used
are black and white, these colours work well together because the white stands out from the
black and this makes the album stand out and catch the eye of the audience, if we compare
the colour scheme that we used for the digipak there you can see that is similar to the
professional digipak that we got inspiration from, however, we wanted it to have more than
two colours in the video so we decided to make a feature in the images stand out and this
was the jumper of the female model, the colour that we decided not to change to a black and
white color scheme was the yellow jumper. This decision benefited the digipak as it draws
your attention to the images as the colour stands out.
The second feature that I will talk about is one of the micro elements and this is
cinematography. The main feature of cinematography that is used here is the camera shots
that are used to capture the images for the digipak. If you look at the image in the ‘Arctic
Monkeys’, you can see that they have used a medium shot for the image. In the album there
is only one image that is used therefor there is only one shot distance, the shot distance that
they took the image in is a medium shot. It is classed as a medium shot because you can
see a good about in the frame however it only shows you the top half of the boys and not the
legs therefore it cannot be a long shot because you cannot see the whole image. What you
see when you look at the image is all four members of the band wearing a white shirt with a
black tie in a dark room with a black background. The two members who are sat at the front
have their head turned the other way to the camera but their eyes are looking down the lens.
The image is edited so it is in black and white meaning that it fits in with the colour scheme
used in the digipak.
After talking about the shots that are used in the digipak it leads me onto talking about the
Lighting in the images. In the ‘arctic monkeys’ digipak lighting has been used in the only
image on the digipak. The image that you can see has a black background and black ties
however, the lighting that is used is just shining on the band members. This is mainly the
reason why lighting is used, to highlight the main features/ artists of the image. By looking at
the lighting that is used in the professional’s digipak it inspired us a helped us get some
ideas on how we will make/ use the lighting in out images for the digipak. When we were
taking the images for this product we took into consideration what location we took the
images in and what time of day we were taking them at, as we didn’t what the images to be
dark otherwise you would not be able to see the different features in the image however, we
also don’t want the images to be to bright otherwise the quality of them won't be very good.
When we took the images for the digipak we took them late morning so that the sun was
high in the sky and it was good for the direction of light shining through the trees.
Another part that gave us ideas for our own product was the ratio between text and images
on the digipak. The ratio between the text and the images on this Arctic Monkeys digipak is
different to other albums because there is not that much of either, text or images. There is
more text on the album than there are images, this is because there is only one image used
and the logo what we can see on the cover and the Cd but there is mostly only text used on
the back page because it is where the track list is and the name of the band in bold. So after
looking at this digipak you can see that our digipak has a lot more images on it than the
‘Arctic Monkeys’ the reason why we did this was because we thought that the idea of having
minimal amount of one feature worked effectively however I thought that it would work with if
we did minimal about of text on the digipak and more images.
There is three different fonts uses throughout the album. The places where the three fonts
are used are the Title that says "Arctic monkeys" on the back cover. The second type of font
that is used to write the track list on the back page. Finally, the third type of font that is used
is the one in the bottom left corner that has all of the information to do the record labels, this
font is alot smaller than the rest. The only place that you can see the font on the digipak is
on the back pages, this is because there is no other text used on the other pages. The way
that our digipak relates to this is that there if different types of fonts used in this product
however there is only two different types of fonts used, one is for the logo of the band, This
is where it says ‘Indie Lines’ and then the other font that is used on the digipak is for the
track list on the back page. The reason why we have only used two different types of font is
so that it relates to the genre by not being over the top and quite basic. Another point that
links to the font is the size of the text. If you look at both of the digipaks you can see that the
name of the band is in a larger size text and it is bolder than the other text used on the
album. The reason behind this is so that the audience can see which artists/ band the album
is for. Following on from this you can see that the text on the back page for the track list it
smaller however, it is still bold so that it stands out as it is a key part of the product.
The final point that I am talking about is to do with the placement of font on the digipak. The
Placement of the font on the ‘Arctic Monkeys’ album is a key feature/ aspect that you have to
plan. You have to plan where you are going to place the font because the title/ band name
has to stand you more than the other text on the page because it is a part of key information,
this is why the band's name in placed right at the top of the back page in a different type and
size of font. So the way that I have used this product to influence my work is that i have
place the band’s name/ logo at the top and in the center of the back page, this shows that it
is a key bit of information.
So throughout the production of this product I have been looking at products which Indie
artists/ bands use to advertise these bands, this is known as a digipak. The way that I have
used these products to help develop my work is by looking at the conventions that are used
in their product such as the from and what the indie genre usual present their work. Whilst
creating my products I used some of the features in the professional digipak in my work as
well. However, when producing this product, I also developed the ideas that I gained from
looking other products. By looking at these products I introduced some new ideas in my
work by I produced something similar to the other product. Finally, if you look at the back
cover of our digipak you can see that I have challenged the features from the professional
digipak by my producing something very different, and this is disrupting the typical
conventions of the indie genre. The way that I did this was by adding an image, font and a
logo onto the same page and crowding the page.
