To add XY data to ArcGIS, open ArcMap and save a spreadsheet as a .dbf file. Then select "Add XY Data", browse for the .dbf file, select a coordinate system like WGS 1984, and click OK. This will add the XY data as a layer that can be mapped with variables from the database displayed.
