World is Flat Questions Assuming that you had available resources and you did not have Federal/State restrictions how would you change your classroom/school/district in preparing students for a “flat world”? What part of Friedman’s Concepts do you embrace? What parts of Friedman’s Concepts do you disagree with?
Challenge The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has just finished reading The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman and have heard Governor Deval Patrick’s Proposal to create 21 st Century Schools in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts House and Senate has just approved funding for a small number of districts to pilot 21 st Century Schools. The funding comes from three sources: Public, University, and Business. Several districts are competing for these resources that will include policies and program changes to curriculum, instruction, technology, and organizational practices. Your school district is interested in applying to become a pilot district and has chosen your team to prepare a proposal for the Massachusetts Board of Education on how to prepare students for a flat world both in each school and in the district.
Challenge (Continued) Using your knowledge of The World is Flat and the Partnership for 21 st Century Skills, create a proposal that you will present at the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Meeting on October 20th or November 3rd. You need to be prepared to present at the October 20 th meeting in case you are chosen.
Guidelines for Challenge You will have the remainder of this class and one additional hour on October 20 th to prepare for this proposal. The presentation has a time limit of 15 minutes with 10 additional minutes allowed for Board of Education Questions. You reference and quote the The World is Flat , cohort member’s blogs, or the Partnership for 21 st Century Skills a minimum of 5 different times in your presentation when you are substantiating reasons for your proposal. Creativity, Innovation and Use of Technology is Encouraged
Next Time World is Flat Presentations Upcoming Assignments Continue Blogging Assignment 5: Complete the online course, Advanced Webliteracy for Educators , from November Learning. Password and user name will be given to participants in June. Due: October 15, 2008 (This assignment will count as 5% of final grade.) Assignment 6 : Read A Whole New Mind and listen to the podcast interviews that Alan November did with the author, Daniel Pink. (Links on iTunes via November Learning Website http:// novemberlearning.com / ) Answer the following in a blog post: “ Look at your school/classroom through the lens of how Pink describes the changes that are occurring. What do you need to change in your classroom and school to prepare your students for a “right-brained world?” Due: November 1, 2008 (This assignment will count as 5% of final grade.)
Next Time (Continued) Assignment 11 (Due on November 4th for Students who attended a conference prior to October 15th) : Attend a technology conference sometime between June 1, 2008 and March 1, 2009. Write about the experience in your blog. In addition, make a 10 minute presentation on the workshops that you attended at a staff meeting in your school. Explain how the information that you learned at the conference could impact your school or classroom. Here are some possible guiding questions: What technology applications are currently being used that could transform classrooms? How can we connect our classrooms globally with other classrooms in other parts of the world? How should we rethink the way that teaching and learning occurs in our schools and classrooms? What will tomorrow’s classroom look like? Due: March 9, 2009 Students who attended a conference prior to October 15th will be presenting on November 4th. You may present in pairs if you attended the same conference. (This assignment will count as 5% of final grade.)
