TRANSCODE LINEAR TO
NON- LINEAR
Directions: Group the following pictures according to their similarities. Each group is
labeled as A and B.
(Group A- Pictures that use texts that need to be read from the beginning to end and
Group B- for pictures that do not need to be read from beginning to end.)
TRANSCODING LINEAR TO NON-LINEAR
TEXTS AND VICE VERSA
 To transcode means to transform something from one for to
another. In order to transcode a linear to non-linear texts or
the other way around, one must first be able to fully
understand what the source text is about. This way, deciding
in the proper text type to be used in the transcoding process
will be easier.
 Step 1. Read and understand the source text to get its main or
central idea.
 Step 2. Extract important details to be included in the visual
presentation.
 Step 3. To be organized, classify information into categories.
Explain visual-verbal relationships illustrated in tables, graphs, and information maps found in expository texts
Example:
Influenza (flu) and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses,
but they are caused by different viruses. Flu viruses can cause mild to
severe illness, including common signs and symptoms such as fever, or
feeling feverish, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, sore throat, runny or
stuffy nose, muscle pain, headache, and in some cases vomiting and
diarrhea. Typically, a person develops symptoms anywhere from 1 to 4
days after infection. On the other hand, COVID-19 seems to cause more
serious illness in some people. Other signs and symptoms of COVID-19,
different from flue, may include changes in or loss of taste or smell. In
addition, a person with COVID-19 virus develops symptoms 5 days after
being infected, but symptoms can appear as early as 2 days after
infection or as late as 14 days after infection, and the time range can
vary.
Process question:
If the paragraph suggests similarities and
differences between influenza (flu) and
COVID-19, what non-linear text should be used
to illustrate its similarities and differences?
Explain visual-verbal relationships illustrated in tables, graphs, and information maps found in expository texts
Transcode the linear text to non-linear
texts
1. According to the survey, 33% of the
students listen to pop music while 29%
listen to indie and rock music, 15%
listen to country music, 13% listen to
hip hop, and
10% listen to classical music.
Transcode a linear text to non-linear text.
(Make a sequence chart based from this
paragraph.)
 2. What are you going to do if your clothes caught fire during
an emergency situation? Here are the things you should do:
First, stop where you are – moving or running feeds air to the
flames and worsen the fire. Next, drop to the floor – if you
stand up, the fire can burn your face. Fold your arms high on
your chest to protect your face. Then, roll slowly on the floor
or ground, in a rug or blanket if you can. Afterwards, cool off
as soon as possible with water or first- and second- degree
burns. Finally, to escape fire, get down low and go.
Transcode Non- Linear to Linear Text
The pie graph represents how the students
spend their time. The students spend the
lowest percentage of time at homework and
eating which is 8 %. Then, watching TV and
socializing are the second with a low
percentage of time which is 13%, followed by
the time they are in school which is 25 %. The
highest spend of time by the students is
sleeping which is 33%.
