The Text : TSUNAMI
A tsunami is a series of waves generated when water in a lake or in the sea is rapidly
displaced on a massive scale. Earthquakes , landslides, volcanic eruption and large meteorite
impacts all have the potential to generate a tsunami. The effect of a tsunami can range from
unnoticeable to devastating.
The term of tsunami comes from the Japanese language meaning harbour ( tsu ) and wave
( nami ). Although in japanese tsunami is used for both singular and plural, in english "tsunamis"
is well-established as the plural. The term was created by fisherman who returned to port to find
the area surrounding the harbour devastated, although they had not been aware of any wave in
the upon water. A tsunami is not subsurface event in the deep ocean; it simply has a much
smaller amplitude (wave heights) offshore, a very long wavelength (often hundreds kilometer
long), which is they generally pass unnoticed at sea, forming only a passing "hump" in the ocean.
Tsunamis have been historically referred to as "tidal waves" because as they approach land
they take on the characteristics of a violent onrushing tide rather than the sort of cresting waves
that are formed by wind action upon the ocean (with which people are more familiar). However,
since they are not related to tides, the term is considered misleading its usage is discouraged by
oceanographers.
Question of Tsunami
General Information
1. What does the text explain about ?
• Answer : the text explain about tsunami in general and
specific.
2. What does paragraph 1 tell about ?
• Answer : about the definition of tsunami in general
3. What is paragraph 2 about ?
• Answer : about the term of tsunami comes from.
4. What is the main idea paragraph 3 ?
• Answer : “Tsunamis have been historically referred to as
Tidal Waves”.
• Specific Information
1. What is tsunami ?
Answer : A tsunami is a series of waves generated when water in a lake or in the sea is
rapidly displaced on a massive scale.
2. What can potentially causes tsunami ?
Answer : Earthquakes , landslides, volcanic eruption and large meteorite .
3. In Japanese, what does tsunami mean ?
Answer : Harbour (tsu) and wave (nami)
4. Why was tsunami used to be referred as ‘tidal wave’ ?
Answer : because as they approach land they take on the characteristics of a violent
onrushing tide rather than the sort of cresting waves that are formed by wind action upon the
ocean (with which people are more familiar)
5. Where did tsunami happen, in deep ocean or near the beach ?
Answer : Near the beach because a tsunami is not subsurface event in the deep ocean; it
simply has a much smaller amplitude (wave heights) offshore, a very long wavelength (often
hundreds kilometer long), which is they generally pass unnoticed at sea, forming only a
passing "hump" in the ocean.
• True or False
1.The effect of tsunami is very devastating.
Answer : True
2.Tsumani has no relationship with tides in the ocean.
Answer : True
3.Since tsunami has a very long wave, oceanography
can predic it.
Answer : False
• Vocabulary
1. What is oceanographers ?
Answer : oceanographers is a global scientist that
studies a wide variety of topics, that have relation
with ocean knowledge, likes biology, chemical,
physic, etc. Or a group of people that work together
worldwide to expand the knowledge of the global
ocean and educate others about ocean process.
2. Tsunami have ... ‘tidal waves’ because as they, the
underline word refers to ...
Answer : tsunami
3. What does amplitude ?
Answer : Amplitude is the maximum displacement of
a periodic wave or can be also means the height of a
wave.
