Grammaticalizing or
Grammaticalization
Lesson II:
Presented by: Vence Jucent A. Dalaguit
MAJ 11
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the
students will be able to:
 Discuss what is grammaticalization,
and
 Identify the concept and types or
processes of grammaticalization.
What is
Grammaticalizing/Grammaticalizatio
n?
French Linguist Antoine
Meillet introduced the
concept of
grammaticalization in his
1912 study “L’evolution des
grammaticales.”
In the domain of historical
linguistics and discourse
analysis, grammaticalization
emerges as a notable
phenomenon marked by
semantic change.
This process involves two
primary aspects: (a) the
transformation of lexical item
into one serving a
grammatical function, and (b)
the evolution of a
grammatical item to acquire a
new grammatical function.
Grammaticalization is described as
the process by which grammar is
created (Croft,2006) or the study of
this process.
For example,
Subject-Verb Agreement:
S-Singular
V-Plural
V-Singular
S-Plural
 It is the language process change by which
words representing objects and actions for
example nouns and verbs become
grammatical markers such as affixes,
preposition etc. which results in the
creation of funtion words through a process
other than deriving them from existing
bound and inflectional constructions derive
them from content words.
Old English, willan- to
want, to wish
Modern English, will-
intention, futurity
Example:
 Grammaticalization involves reduction
and increased dependency. Reduction
also known us phonetic erosion or
phonological reduction is an
expression in linguistics that loses
phonetic substance if it undergoes
grammaticalization.
let us, as in “let us eat”
reduced to
let’s, as in “let’s you and
me fight”.
Example:
The Cline Concept
 Instead of abrupt shifts between
categories, language forms undergo
series small, similar transitions.
 In simpler terms, a cline is a pattern
we observe in languages worldwide.
Noun to Preposition:
-Original noun: top
-Transitional Stage: on
the top of
-Final Stage: on
Example 1:
Noun to Adjective:
-Original noun: friend
-Transitional Stage: friendly
-Final Stage: kind
Example 2:
Types of
Grammaticalizing or
Grammaticalization
MAJ 11
There are 4 types of
grammaticalization,
Variety
Morphological
Reduction
Semantic
Bleaching
Phonetic
Erosion
Obligatori-
fication
What is Semantic Bleaching?
Semantic bleaching or
desemanticization, has been seen as a
characteristic of grammaticalization. It
can be described as the loss of all
grammaticalization, bleaching refer to
the lost of all (or more) lexical content
of an entity while only its grammatical
For example:
thing ---- shit
thing- assembly or council anything
shit- diarrhea thing/stuff
● Don’t touch my things./ Don’t touch my
shit.
● I’ve got a lot of things to take care of this
weekend./ I’ve got a lot of shits to take care
What is Morphological Reduction?
Once a linguistic expression has changed from
lexical to a grammatical meaning (bleaching),
it is likely to lose morphological and syntactic
elements that were characteristics of its initial
category, but which are not relevant to the
grammatical function called
decategorialization or morphological
reduction.
Demonstrative: I saw that. He went
there.
Complementizer: I saw that [he went
there].
For example:
That (Demonstrative)
That (Complimentizer)
What is Phonetic Erosion?
Phonetic erosion (also called phonological
attrition or phonological reduction), is the
process that is often linked to
grammaticalization. It implies that a linguistic
expression loses phonetic substance when it
has undergone grammaticalization.
Going to --- gonna (or even I am going
to --- I’m gonna --- Imma)
Because --- coz
For example:
What is Obligatorification?
Obligatorification is when content word
is used in a specific context in a specific
way, it may become more grammatical
over time.
“The man is
here.”
For example:
“The” must be used to indicate
that we are referring to a
specific, known man.
Thank you
for
listening!
