The Role of Faculty

 Depends on the type of institution – the multiversity

 Learn, transmit learning, and create conditions for
 learning

           University Professor
 Research, Teaching, and Service
 Publish or Perish!
 Pursuit of Knowledge
 Peer Review, Reputations, Professional Awards, and
  Development
 Committee and Administrative Duties
 Reward System - TENURE
Faculty Workload - LRU
 Average more than 50 hours of work per week.
 Spend less time in class per week, but generate as many
student contact hours as their peers in small colleges due
to larger class sizes in these institutions.
 Percent of teaching time declines with rank.
 Research-oriented faculty are more likely to be male,
younger, and to have spent fewer years at the institution.
 Few faculty spend much of their time on service to the
  community.

 Teacher First, Specialist Second
 Interdisciplinary
