Agenda
 History
 Rationale for a Student chapter
 Challenges
 Service projects/opportunities
 Strengths
 Weaknesses
 Building or strengthening your student chapter
 Why this matters
History of HI-SCEC
 Started off with solid student-based membership
 Part of Teacher Training program (B.Ed. and M.Ed.)
 Moving away from “requirement”
 SCEC became stagnant and faded away
 New faculty advisor in 2001
 Breathes new life into student chapter
   Actively recruited officers
 Officers planned events, meetings, socials, etc.
 Constant development
Rationale of SCEC
 Teacher candidates need exposure to the community
 Getting students out of “ivory tower”
 Fostering “community” within the College of Education
 Introducing teacher candidates to great resources
 Providing leadership opportunities
Challenges
 Student interest plateau
 “New” generation of students
   Juggling many roles
 The reality of being a student hits
 Different priorities
 Challenge in developing highly motivated student leaders
 Lack of full faculty “buy in”
Service Projects/Opportunities
Strengths
 Participating in service opportunities in the community
 Networking with fellow peers
 Developing leadership skills
 Fostering greater relationships between teacher
  candidates and university faculty
 Giving back just feels right
Weaknesses
 Initial enthusiasm fades
 Lack of continuity
 Convincing teacher candidates and other students that
providing service to their communities is great
 Same core students help
   Complacency, tiredness, feeling “alone”
Discussion On Strengthening
     or Building Your SCEC
 Group discussion
 How can we strengthen you current student chapter?
 How can we support you in building a student chapter?
Why the SCEC Matters
 Networking
 Gaining valuable resources
 Taking evidence-based practices into the classroom
 Employment
 Looking for well-rounded teacher candidates
 Children with exceptionalities deserve the best teachers
  possible!
 SCEC helps develop teacher candidates further
Thank You!
