This document describes a failure analysis of composite windshields conducted through finite element modeling. The windshield model was created in Solid Edge ST8 and imported into ABAQUS for meshing and analysis. The windshield was modeled with glass layers and a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer at various orientations. Impact simulations were performed with a 100g spherical object at 27.77 m/s to analyze stresses, deformation, and energies. Results showed stresses up to 139 MPa and 3mm deflection for glass-only, and up to 126 MPa and 3.5mm deflection when PVB was included.
