- 12. Solute the substance that is present in lesser amount in a solution, that substance that is being dissolved. The salt in a salt water solution is the solute.
- 13. Solvent the substance that is present in greater amount is a solution, that substance that is doing the dissolving. The water in a salt water solution is the solvent.
