Fall Semester Review Parts A  C Did you know that the final counts as much as an entire six weeks?
Safety The dependent variable goes on the x-axis The independent variable goes on the y-axis
Direct
Indirect
Safety Rules Always heat substances slowly Wear closed toe shoes, tie back hair, goggles Never used cracked glassware Always pour Acids into water, not vice versa Keep chemicals separated to avoid contamination. Never pour chemicals back into original bottle.
Mixtures Filtration – Mixture is poured through a filter to separate large particles Distillation – Mixture is boiled to separate out very small particles. (Salt and Water)
Heterogeneous mixture a combination of two or more substances that are not uniformly dispersed.
Homogeneous mixture a combination of two or more substances that are uniform throughout
Solution a homogeneous mixture composed of a solute and a solvent Example: Salt Water Small Particles No Tyndall Effect No Layers Formed
Colloid a mixture that contains medium particles that are evenly distributed throughout a medium and do not settle out over time. Have Tyndall
Suspension a mixture of large particle that either settle out overtime or can be filtered Have Tyndall
Solute the substance that is present in lesser amount in a solution, that substance that is being dissolved. The salt in a salt water solution is the solute.
Solvent the substance that is present in greater amount is a solution, that substance that is doing the dissolving. The water in a salt water solution is the solvent.
Filtrate the liquid that flows through the filter paper.
Tyndall effect the scattering effect caused when light is passed through a mixture.
Extensive Property that depends on amount of substance Ex: Weight
Intensive Does not depend on amount of substance Ex: Color
Pure Substance Not a mixture 100% of either one element or one compound Example: 100% Oxygen or Sugar No Tyndall, Layers etc
Mixture Two ore more substances mixed together Example: Salt and Water Sometimes does tyndall, form layers.
Using Water InDirect = In a factory far away Direct = in your own house
Atoms History and Scientists See the other document here in Mypisd for scientist information.
In a neutral atom: Protons = Electrons = Atomic Number Mass = Protons + Neutrons Neutrons = Mass -Protons
% x Mass = ____ % x Mass = ____ % x Mass = ____ Add all answers up to find total mass. Final answer should be close to largest percentage.
