Growth
What Is Computer Science?
Computer science education encompasses “the study of
computers and algorithmic processes, including their principles,
hardware and software designs, applications, and impact on
society.”

Computer Science develops students’ computational and critical
thinking skills and shows them how to create, not simply
use, new technologies.
This fundamental knowledge is needed to prepare students for
the 21st century, regardless of their ultimate field of study or
occupation.
Computer Science – It’s Not Just About
Working for IT Companies
Manufacturing
Healthcare
Financial Services

Retail
Information
Technology

• designing simulations to improve products

• exploring vast quantities of data produced by new DNA sequencing
techniques, developing new remote monitoring systems for
patients, or designing security & privacy for medical records

• designing and overseeing automated trading services

• analyzing data to predict trends and improve inventory
management

• designing security software and hardware systems or

developing mobile communication devices, networks and
applications

Achievement & Skills Gaps
• By 2020, 50% of STEM field jobs in the U.S. will be in computing
– 3 of top 5 fastest growing fields in Massachusetts
• 23 of the state’s 378 public high schools taught a programming
class in which 10 or more students took an AP exam in the subject
• In 2012, only 713 Massachusetts students took the AP
Computer Science exam, of which 43.6% scored below “qualified”
• Just 139 of the test takers were female, 196 were low
income, 48 were Hispanic, and 36 were African American.
• Not only are we failing to prepare most students: we’re also
facing significant gender, income, and ethnicity gaps in computer
science education.

  • #3: update
  • #20: 3.6% Black (13.1%), 8% Latino (Mex, other hisp, puertorican) – 17% vs. 29% Asian (5 %)Plus Amer. Indian you get 12% Underrep students of color. vs. 30% national54% White (78%)Most updated data: In 2013, there were about 30k (29,555) US students who took the AP CS exam last year out of a total of 2.2 mil (2,160,331) students.  This means that only 1.4 percent of students who took any AP exam took the Advanced Placement Computer Science exam in 2013.  Of the 1.4 mil (1,379,585) AP math and science exams taken in 2013, 2.14 percent were AP CS exams.  Because students can take more than one AP exam, we can't accurately claim 2 percent of students, just 2 percent of exams. According to the Center for Ed Reform and nces.ed.gov, there were 16.4 mil (16,375,000) high school students in 2010.  So if we didn't increase the total high school student population at all from 2010, only .18 percent of high school students would have taken the AP CS exam in 2013.... not even a quarter of one percent.AP 2013 US data: http://media.collegeboard.com/digitalServices/pdf/research/2013/National_Summary_13.xlsEd stats: http://www.edreform.com/2012/04/k-12-facts/
  • #21: I don’t want all computer science students to become computer scientists or even programmers!  I want them to become dancers, lawyers, writers, and doctors… and use what they learned in high school or college to bring innovation into their fields.  Peter Denning, an early voice on computational thinking, remarked that the natural sciences are increasingly becoming information sciences. And in this Information Age, the bit is it.  Let’s teach our kids to control the bit!
