FinalSynopsis
For my final synopsis, I have chosen Option 5, from the
various film ideas I have constructed. It is an adaptation of
Option 4 due to a easier and tangible location for filming.
Due to the filming being done on a spacious yet confined
terrace as opposed to a broad pedestrian street, it would be
substantially easier to film without any distractions from
possible bystanders or unexpected background noise.
Furthermore, the main premise being a deserted street, an
early morning shooting would be required in order to
ensure a more precise mis-en-scene. Moreover, an
additional benefit to shooting on a terrace is that various
angle can be implemented in filming and therefore
enlivening the visual aesthetic of the short film.

Flashback
Screenplay
Inner motivation:
Both guilt and regret embody the inner motivation of the main character in my
short film. Being an air traffic controller he was held responsible for a relatively
recent airplane crash, a situation he was helpless in, due to a disconnection
between him and the pilot for a short but poignant period of 45 minutes.
Therefore, he feels accountable and mortified for the lives lost.
Outer Motivation:
The main character’s goal and desire is to overcome this anxiety and proceed on
with his life. However, the consistent foreboding reminiscences haunt him and
thus enclose him mentally so that he cannot progress. This positive goal and
desire however is not shaped through the main character’s mental perception,
but rather his subconscious which is depicted through a separate human, the
bubble person, in order to emphasize the goal being directly pinpointed to the
main character. The position of the two characters mirroring each other
metaphorically depicts a visualized self-reflection of the main character. The
sharp visual appearance of both further emphasizes this notion.
-
Conflict
Throughout the short film, the main character has come to
opposition with two sources. One being his mentally
fabricated individuals and the other being the bubble
person, which coincidently is himself. The opposition
with the numerous individuals is illustrated as a form of
repeated helplessness as he is not protecting the
passengers yet again but letting them flee to their
inevitable future which he is aware of.The second and
more poignant opposition is with the bubble person.
Representing his subconscious, the bubble person
therefore demonstrates the main character but from a
different point of view. This visualization therefore
makes the main character’s conflict even more poignant.
-
Theme
Through various vivid symbols and metaphors, most
poignantly being the bubble character, the theme of self-
reflection and criticism is ever-present in this short film.
During the cycle of self-deprecation, a form of guilt and
regret arises and grows uncontrollably. A sense of enclosed
escape is ubiquitous. This state can be only freed by the
notion of critical and direct confrontation which the bubble
character embodies as the subconscious. Therefore, the
only method of resolves an inner turmoil is to find peace
within. Symbolically, the this freedom of conflict is
demonstrated through the bubble character’s main prop.
The structure of a bubble represents a problem which has
been resolved is therefore flying away leaving the main
character gradually becoming less turbulent.

Character Profiles
 Main character:
The main character in my short film remains unnamed since he solely
embodies the abstract notion of worry and mental instability. He is a
middle aged man of a middle socio-economic level. He is reserved and
depicted as an unsocial person. His appearance is not signified by any
visually vibrant details as his mental state is the only concept that should
stand out to the audience. His mental state is comprised of the struggle
to overcome his guilt and regret of being held responsible for an airplane
crash.
 Bubble Person:
The bubble person coincidently also remains unnamed as he symbolizes
the main character’s subconscious as a form of an abstract notion. His
lurid and poignant appearance of colorful and scruffy clothes act as a
visual contrast to the main character and aids to depict to the audience
that he signifies the detached subconscious the main character is trying
to implement and listen to. He is of a casual and carefree nature and
additionally his approach is very direct, another sharp contrast to the
wearisome main character in order to express the difference between
the two.
