Finite resources reflection
- 1. Finite Resources Reflection Global Inquiry: I learned that “finite” means a set amount that could run out. Some examples of finite resources include trees, coal and oil. It is important to conserve fossil fuels because it can run out; it can cause global warming and pollute the earth. Some alternative solutions are using solar energy, using less electricity, walking when going somewhere near you instead of driving and using your bicycle instead of motorcycle or cars. While investigating the oil industry, the most interesting thing I learned was oil had been used for 3000 years. Local Inquiry: During my Home Energy Audit, I discovered that in my house I am using too much energy. So, I set goals to try and turn off the lights when I am not in the room, During our BISS Energy Audit, we discovered many problems, such as teachers using too much energy, throwing papers in waste bin instead of recycling bin. So, we set a goal to give a recycling bin to each elementary class. Taking Action: School Conversation Campaign It is important to reduce, reuse and recycle paper because every ton of paper recycled saves 17 trees, 587 pounds of air pollution, 15,644 liters of water, 1042 liters of oil, 4077 kilowatts of energy and a water reduction of 58%. First we needed to make the recycling bins for the classes. Then we gave the recycling bins to each class and explained to them why recycling is important and we told them we would collect it every day. Finally, we will sell it to a family across the street from school and they will take it to the recycling center. It was difficult to make the recycling bin because we needed to cut, glue and color. I enjoyed this action because we could save a lot of trees from being cut down. Environmental Music Video We use persuasive language techniques in our lyrics, such as rhetorical questions, rhyming and repetition. I think the most persuasive line in the lyrics is “Don’t you wanna save the Earth? Don’t you want a greener world.” Because it has rhetorical questions and rhyming in it. I enjoyed making this video because I get to be an actor in the film and the editor. If I did another music video, I would make it about oil because not only trees are running out but oil and coal are also running out. What else? During this natural forces unit I especially enjoyed making the film and trying to create the lyrics. After this unit, I will continue to recycle and use less energy.
