Coal forms over millions of years from dead plants and animals buried under water and dirt. The heat and pressure transforms the remains into hard, black coal. Coal is collected through surface mining, which digs large holes to extract coal near the surface, or underground mining using tunnels. Once extracted, coal is cleaned and processed at plants then sold or burned to produce energy, making it an important resource that powers 40% of the world's electricity. However, coal also harms the environment when burned and through the surface mining process.
