Good Afternoon dear teacher and classmate
In today’s presentation i’ll be presenting a very useful topic.
How many phonemes do we have in English?
Firstof all i’mgonna startthis presentation by remindingyou the concept of phoneme.
PRESENTATION STARTS RIGHT HERE
Types of phoneme
According to the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) There are 44 phonemes in English Language. These
44 phonemes are divided into two main categories: vowels and consonants.
Please advance to the next slide.
PRESENTACIÓN DEL CUADRO
As we can see we have the chart is distributed in two sections. The vowels are up there in the chart, whereas
the consonants are below.
* Vowels and Consonants have special features or aspects:
1) Vowels are distributed in two sections: The singles vowels and the diphthongs.
-Single vowels have short and long sounds. We can recognize or identify the long vowels on the chart,
because they have a colon “:” next to the symbol. Long vowels are basically a longer versión of short
vowels.
- In the same way we have the diphthongs: Pink on the chart.
A diphthong is acombination of two single vowels together.Which means that when we produce the sounds
we’re going to start with one sound and we’re going to finish with another.
2) Now let’s move on now to the consonants,we can distinguish two features: The voiced and unvoiced
consonants. (Blue and green on the chart respectively)
This basically means that when we try to pronounce the voiced consonants we’re going to feel, notice,
realize a sort of vibration on this part of your neck, Unlike the unvoiced consonants where you won’t feel
the vibration.
What we’re going to do now is listen to the phonemes.
So, i have the sounds of the phonemes that i downloaded from the internet that i would liketo sharewith
you guys, i considered very appropriate putting them on the slide, so the presentation can be more
understandable, useful, helpful and valuable for all of us, including myself.
A phoneme is the smallestunitof speech that distinguishes oneword from another in a particular
language.
What do I mean by that? For instanceIn English, we have the words kill and kiss,We change the meaning
of this word by only changing the phoneme /l/ for another phoneme, in this case/s/. That’s how we get
the word kiss.
put into movement your vocal tract (aparato fonador)= poner en movimiento tu aparato
fonador, organs of speech.
develope, strengthen, adapt
Here is an exercisethat helps you to feel the difference between voiced consonants (blueon the chart)
from unvoiced consonants (green on the chart):
touch your neck with your hand and pronounce first the /p/ sound and then the /b/ sound:when saying the
/b/ sound you will notice that your voice box (or larynx) will
Voiced consonants=when you produce the /b/ sound there is a vibration
Unvoiced consonants=but when saying the /p/ sound there is no vibration.
