FIVE TRAITS OF
TECHNICAL
WRITING
Development of a scoring rubric focusing on specific
criteria (clarity, conciseness, accessibility, audience
recognition, and accuracy) and application of the rubric
to evaluate a technical writing sample
SCORING RUBRIC CONSTRUCTION
• The class will be divided into pairs.
• Each group will be assigned the task of constructing a scoring rubric based on the
five criteria.
• Clarity: How easily the writing can be understood.
• Conciseness: How well the writing avoids unnecessary words or complexity.
• Accessibility: How the writing accommodates diverse audiences, including those
with varying levels of expertise.
• Audience Recognition: How well the writing acknowledges and tailors its message
to the intended audience.
• Accuracy: How precise and correct the information presented is.
• Each group should create a rubric with a 5-point scale for each criterion, where 1 is
poor and 5 is excellent.
APPLICATION OF THE RUBRIC
• Each pair will search for a technical
writing sample.
• The sample will be evaluated using the
rubric they constructed.
• Comments and suggestions will also be
required in the activity.
