Mr Fletcher – Y7 IS
Read and compare two books
• A Wizard Of Earthsea
• By Ursula Le Guin
• A Dog So Small
• By Philippa Pearce
Ursula Le Guin was an
American writer who usually
writes fantasy or science
fiction novels and short
stories for adults and
children
A Wizard of Earthsea is the
first book of a series of five
stories. It was published in
1968.
Ursula Le Guin died in 2018.
Philippa Pearce was a
British writer who wrote
children's stories, often
with an element of fantasy.
A Dog So Small was her
third book, and it was
published in 1962.
Philippa Pearce died in
2006
Why have I chosen these books?
• A Wizard of Earthsea
• I've read it before a number of times but not for about 15 years
• I always enjoy reading it – it's a mixture of magic and fantasy and quite
serious ideas.
• I've never read the fifth and last book in the series so I might read all of them
again now
• I think it's an interesting book because of its messages and values – both
about big issues of life, power, responsibility and death and about race and
identity.
Why have I chosen these books
• A Dog So Small
• I've read it before, once, when I was about 12 or 13
• I remember roughly what it's all about without remembering the detail at all
• What I do remember about it was the experience of reading it – I remember
reading it on a train journey and being so completely engaged in the book
that I forgot where I was or what I was doing.
• I'm interested in reading it again to think about what it was about the book,
and what it was about me when I was 12 or 13, that created that experience
Why have I chosen these books
• Why these two together?
• They are both children's books appropriate for KS3, and I wanted to choose
books that the class might have read, or could reasonably be expected to read
• A Wizard of Earthsea is a fantasy novel set in an imagined world, and A Dog So
Small isn't, it's a real world novel set in reality. However, from what I
remember it's also about the idea of magic (in a very different way) - so I
think there's an interesting comparison between a fantasy book about
'real' magic, and a real book about 'fantasy' magic
• I've been looking for an excuse to find and read A Dog So Small again for ages.
• They're both books that are mainly about boys/men but they are both written
by women
What am I going to do (probably)
• Read both of the books again
• Write an immediate response to each book when I finish reading it
• How did it make me feel
• What did I like about it (www/ebi feedback!)
• Watch the 'Tales from Earthsea' Studio Ghibli film (again) and think (and
write) about what happened in the adaptation
• Choose a section from each book to read aloud and record my reading.
• Choose a section of both of the stories to rewrite from a different
character's perspective
• Choose a section of both of the stories to rewrite to try to change reader
sympathy/empathy
• More things.
