This presentation discusses the flight data recorder (FDR), also known as the black box. The FDR records aircraft performance parameters and is located in the tail. It records data that is used to investigate accidents and analyze aircraft safety. The FDR has several cards that regulate parameters like CPU, analog, discrete and frequency. It also contains an underwater locator beacon that transmits a signal if the plane crashes in water to help with locating the FDR.

- 2. What is Flight Data Recorder(FDR)? • “A Flight Data Recorder is a device used to record specific aircraft performance parameters”.
- 3. FDRs are usually located in the rear of the aircraft, typically in the tail.
- 4. Black Box FDR is also referred as Black Box , the data recorded by the FDR is used for accident investigation, and also for analyzing aircraft safety.
- 5. This records the conversation in the cockpit, radio conversation between cockpit crew and others including conversation with ATC personnel.
- 6. . Power supply : 115v AC or 28v DC . Battery backup : 30 day continuous . Life span : six-year maximum . Under water locater beacon . Time recorded : 25 hours continuous . Temperature : 1100deg/c
- 7. It has following main cards: 1. CPU card 2. Analog card 3. Discrete card 4. Frequency card 5. Audio card 6. Power supply card The basic function of the flash memory is to store the program that regulate and co ordinate among the 6 cards available, and the programming language on which the software works on is c++.
- 8. In case of overwater accident ULB is provided with the locater which transmits an acoustical signal on 37.5khz that can be detected with a special receiver. The beacon can transmit from depths down to 14000 feet.

The FDR is a miniaturized computer system that tracks a variety of data regarding the flight of the plane, including its airspeed, position and altitude.
