Name a fluid. You probably think of one like water, and you are right. Liquids are fluids, but so are gases such as the air we breathe. FLUIDS IN OUR LIVES
* What do you think are some properties of a fluid? List four. * How do changes in fluids affect living things? List four.
A Close-Up Look at Fluid Flow Fluids are substances that flow. Both gases and liquids are fluids. For example, air flows in certain directions. Fluids can cause problems for some people… ie. How will a tower withstand a gusty wind? How will deposits on artery walls affect the flow of blood?
FLOW RATE: how quickly a fluid flows in a given amount of time Systems involving moving fluids are said to be DYNAMIC. AERODYNAMICS refers to air (gas) moving around a solid object. HYDRODYNAMICS refers to the motion of liquids around a solid object.
Solids that seem to flow: Think of taking a container of sand and pouring it on the blacktop out back. What happens? It forms a heap or tiny hill. Can you do the same with a jug of milk and create a heap? The answer is NO! Only solids can be piled in a heap. Liquids and gases fill whatever container they are in.
THE PARTICLE THEORY: All matter is composed of particles, the building blocks of life (everything) Particles are in constant motion, they are always moving There are forces of attraction among particles, like magnets
