1. Medieval scribes used full justification for text, which was made easier by the Gutenberg printing press in 1445. The first known printed advertisement from 1480 also used full justification.
2. Ragged right formatting became popular around 1930 as it eliminated the need for uneven spacing to fill lines, and typewriters could not justify text.
3. With computers, justifying text is now virtually costless. Experiments found comprehension was about 5% greater with justified versus ragged right text for moderate to long lines.
