COMMUNICATION
Small Group Activity
1. The class will be divided into five groups.
2. Each Group will role play the following scenarios reflecting
Regulation and Control as function of Communication:
Group 1 - A father motivating his child to do good
Group 2 - Friendly conversations
Group 3 - A teacher telling the classroom rules
Group 4 - Making Announcements
Group 5 - Birthday Surprise
3. Your Performance will be graded by a performance rubric
Performance Rubric
 20 points – Performs/follows the tasks with group
coordination
 18 points – Performs/follows the tasks but misses
group coordination
 16 points- Performs/Follows the tasks but lacks group
coordination
Why do we need to study the Functions of
Communication?
- Communication functions refer to how people
use language for different purposes.
- refers to how language is affected by different
time, place, and situation used to control the
behavior of people used to regulate the nature
and amount of activities people engage in
FIVE FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION
1. Regulation and Control
-controls others by managing their behavior
Examples:
A teacher telling his/her students to keep quiet
A speaker speaks in a forum
REGULATION/CONTROL
a. Verbal Cues
- these are the specific words chosen and used.
- the speaker and the listener should be respectful of
each other’s culture as well as of their age, gender, social
status and religion.
- the words used are usually directives, orders, and
request

b. Nonverbal Cues
- include hand gestures, bodily action, vocal tone,
and eye contact
- the speaker and the listener when exhibiting
nonverbal cues, should be respectful of each other’s culture
as well as of their age, gender, social status and religion.

-the speaker and listener must be respectful of
each other’s culture
- the words usually used are informal terms and
casually delivered

b. Nonverbal Cues
-include hand gestures, bodily action, vocal tone
and eye contact
-the speaker and listener must be respectful of
each other’s culture
- the tone used is friendly, even teasing, and body
action is relaxed.
MOTIVATION

-are the specific words chosen and used
-the speaker and listener must be respectful of
each other’s culture
- more direct and purposeful words are used
