RULES OF
BASKETBALL
1.The ball may be thrown in any
direction with one or both hands.
2.The ball may be batted in any
direction with one or both hands
(never with the fist).
3. A player cannot run with the
ball. The player must throw it
from the spot on which he
catches it, allowance to be made
for a man who catches the ball
when running at a good speed if
he tries to stop.
4.The ball must be held in or between
the hands; the arms or body must not
be used for holding it.
5.No shouldering, holding, pushing,
tripping, or striking in any way the
person of an opponent shall be
allowed; the first infringement of this
rule by any player shall count as a foul,
the second shall disqualify him until
the next goal is made, or, if there was
evident intent to injure the person, for
the whole of the game, no substitute
allowed.
6.A foul is striking at the ball with the
fist, violation of Rules 3,4, and such as
described in Rule 5.
7.If either side makes three consecutive fouls,
it shall count a goal for the opponents
(consecutive means without the opponents in
the mean time making a foul).
8.A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown
or batted from the grounds into the basket and
stays there, providing those defending the
goal do not touch or disturb the goal. If the ball
rests on the edges, and the opponent moves
the basket, it shall count as a goal.
9.When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be
thrown into the field of play by the person first
touching it. In case of a dispute, the umpire
shall throw it straight into the field. The
thrower-in is allowed five seconds; if he holds
it longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side
persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall
call a foul on that side.
10.The umpire shall be judge of the
men and shall note the fouls and notify
the referee when three consecutive
fouls have been made. He shall have
power to disqualify men according to
Rule 5.
11.The referee shall be judge of the
ball and shall decide when the ball is in
play, in bounds, to which side it
belongs, and shall keep the time. He
shall decide when a goal has been
made, and keep account of the goals
with any other duties that are usually
performed by a referee.
12.The time shall be two 15-minute
halves, with five minutes' rest
between.
13.The side making the most
goals in that time shall be
declared the winner. In case of a
draw, the game may, by
agreement of the captains, be
continued until another goal is
made.

BASKETBALL, WAS PLAYED FOR THE FIRST TIME AS AN
OLYMPIC SPORT IN BERLIN IN 1936.
HE FURTHER REQUESTED THAT IF SUCH A MEMORIAL WERE TO BE
ERECTED, IT BE LOCATED AT THE BIRTHPLACE OF BASKETBALL,
SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE. THIS MEMORIAL IS NOW A REALITY ON THE
COLLEGE CAMPUS. THE BEAUTIFUL SHRINE IS FITTINGLY NAMED THE
NAISMITH MEMORIAL BASKETBALL HALL.
DR. NAISMITH PASSED AWAY ON NOVEMBER 26, 1936 AT HIS HOME IN
LAURENCE, KANSAS
THE GAME WAS EXPORTED TO EUROPE IN 1893 WHERE IT HAS BEEN
PLAYED EVER SINCE. THE SPORT MADE ITS OLYMPICS DEBUT AT THE
BERLIN GAMES IN 1936, ONE YEAR AFTER THE FIRST EUROPEAN
CHAMPIONSHIP WAS ORGANIZED BY THE INTERNATIONAL BASKETBALL
FEDERATION (FIBA).

-A PIECE OF BASKRTBALL EQUIPMENT. IT IS RAISEDVERTICAL
BOARD WITH A BASKET ATTACHED. IT IS MADE OF A FLAT, RIGID
PIECE OF MATERIAL, OFTEN PLEXI GLASS. IT IS USUALLY
RECTANGULAR AS USED IN NBA, NCAA AND INTERNATIONAL
BASKETBALL.

SCOREBOARD
-A large board for publicly displaying the score in a game or match. Most levels of sport from high
school and above use at least one scoreboard for keeping score, measuring time, and displaying
statistics.There are two type of score board the FOUR-SIDED SCORE BOARD and the SINGLE-
SIDED SCOREBOARD.
FOUR-SIDED SCOREBOARD ONE-SIDED SCOREBOARD
FUNCTIONS AND POSITIONS OF PLAYER
1. POINT GUARD- play maker/ ball handler . This player is typically the best dribbler and passer
on the team. The point guard is sometimes called the floor general, which indicates the key role that the
point guard plays.
2. SHHOTING GUARD- a team’s best outside shooter. This player flanks the point guard and moves
around the court to try to create some space to take a shot that is uncontested by the position.
3. SMALL FORWARD – quicker and learner the PF/C. This player is typically a better outside shooter than
a power forward and is usually smaller than a power forward.
4. POWER FORWARD- skilled rebounder. This player is usually near the basket and moves from one side
of the basket to other to try to get free the opposition player that is guarding him.
5. CENTER- plays the baseline near the basket. These players are the tallest player on the team. The
center’s role is to established a position near the basket to allow him/herself an easy jump shot. On
defense, the attempts to block shots and grab rebounds.
TYPES OF PASSING
CHEST PASS-the most basic way to move the basketball from one
player to an open teammate who is not guarded at all by a
defender.
BOUNCE PASS-accurate as a chest pass and is harder to defend.
OVERHEAD PASS-used by snapping the ball over the head, like a
soccer thrown-in.
BASEBALL PASS-type of passing to use when the balls is in the
back court.
BEHINDTHE BACK PASS-the pass dealt to a target behind the
passer’s back.
TYPES OF DRIBBLING
1. CONTROL OR LOW DRIBBLE- done as a player’s defense from a
defender closely guarding the ball.
2. HIGH OR SPEED DRIBBLE-usually done in making fast break or
after making a steal in an open court.
3. CROSSOVER DRIBBLE-allows quick change in direction.
4. BEHIND THE BACK DRIBBLE-dribbling technique involves
dribbling the ball. Behind the back either once.
5. BETWEEN THE LEGS DRIBBLE- means dribbling the ball low
while alternately transferring it to opposite directions passing the
ball.

  • 39. FUNCTIONS AND POSITIONS OF PLAYER 1. POINT GUARD- play maker/ ball handler . This player is typically the best dribbler and passer on the team. The point guard is sometimes called the floor general, which indicates the key role that the point guard plays. 2. SHHOTING GUARD- a team’s best outside shooter. This player flanks the point guard and moves around the court to try to create some space to take a shot that is uncontested by the position. 3. SMALL FORWARD – quicker and learner the PF/C. This player is typically a better outside shooter than a power forward and is usually smaller than a power forward. 4. POWER FORWARD- skilled rebounder. This player is usually near the basket and moves from one side of the basket to other to try to get free the opposition player that is guarding him. 5. CENTER- plays the baseline near the basket. These players are the tallest player on the team. The center’s role is to established a position near the basket to allow him/herself an easy jump shot. On defense, the attempts to block shots and grab rebounds.

TYPES OF PASSING CHEST PASS-the most basic way to move the basketball from one player to an open teammate who is not guarded at all by a defender. BOUNCE PASS-accurate as a chest pass and is harder to defend. OVERHEAD PASS-used by snapping the ball over the head, like a soccer thrown-in. BASEBALL PASS-type of passing to use when the balls is in the back court. BEHINDTHE BACK PASS-the pass dealt to a target behind the passer’s back.
  • 41. TYPES OF DRIBBLING 1. CONTROL OR LOW DRIBBLE- done as a player’s defense from a defender closely guarding the ball. 2. HIGH OR SPEED DRIBBLE-usually done in making fast break or after making a steal in an open court. 3. CROSSOVER DRIBBLE-allows quick change in direction. 4. BEHIND THE BACK DRIBBLE-dribbling technique involves dribbling the ball. Behind the back either once. 5. BETWEEN THE LEGS DRIBBLE- means dribbling the ball low while alternately transferring it to opposite directions passing the ball.
