Venn diagrams were developed by John Venn to visually represent relationships between sets. The universal set is represented by a rectangle and other sets of interest are depicted as circles within the rectangle. Elements common to two or more sets are located in the overlapping region of the circles. A survey of 100 college students found that 75 owned stereos, 45 owned cars, and 35 owned both. A Venn diagram was used to determine that 85 students owned either a car or stereo, while 15 did not own either.
